Space Bubble Jump-a-Thon โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: K | Subject: Math, Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students jump in personal space bubbles, compare quantities using counting manipulatives, and identify safety helpers at school.

Standards

  • K.CC.6 (Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to another group)
  • K.MD.2 (Directly compare two objects with a measurable attribute in common)
  • HE.K.2.1 (Identify how family members help us stay healthy)
  • HE.K.2.2 (Identify adults at school who help keep us healthy and safe)
  • PE.K.1.2 (Performs jumping and landing actions with balance)
  • PE.K.2.1 (Differentiates between movement in personal and general space)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Jump safely within their personal space "bubble" while maintaining balance
  • Count and record the number of jumps completed in 30 seconds
  • Compare jump totals using "more than," "less than," and "equal to"
  • Use counting manipulatives to represent and compare jump quantities
  • Identify at least three adults at school who help keep students safe
  • Explain why staying in personal space helps keep everyone safe during physical activity

Supplies Needed

  • Counting manipulatives (cubes, bears, or counters)
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Chart paper
  • White paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Timer or stopwatch

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students on the carpet. Demonstrate a "space bubble" by extending arms out and spinning in place. "This is my personal space bubble! When I'm in my bubble, I can move safely without bumping into friends. Today we'll jump in our bubbles and use math to compare how many jumps we can do!"

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Space Bubble Setup (5 minutes): Have students find their space bubble by extending arms out and ensuring they can't touch anyone. Practice 3 different types of jumps: two feet together, one foot to the other, and jumping jacks. Emphasize landing softly with bent knees.
  2. First Jump Challenge (8 minutes): Students jump in place for 30 seconds while you count aloud and time them. Have them remember their number. Repeat once more. Write a few student totals on the whiteboard (choose varied numbers like 15, 23, 18).
  3. Manipulative Representation (10 minutes): Give each student counting manipulatives. Have them count out the same number of manipulatives as their jumps. Walk around helping students create their "jump towers" or lines. Ask students to show their neighbor and compare: "Who has more cubes?"
  4. Comparison Math Circle (12 minutes): Call students back to carpet with their manipulatives. Select 2-3 students to share their jump totals. Place their manipulatives in clear view. Guide class to compare: "Emma jumped 20 times, Carlos jumped 15 times. Let's count Emma's cubes... Carlos's cubes... Who jumped more?" Introduce language: "20 is greater than 15" and "15 is less than 20."
  5. Safety Helper Discussion (8 minutes): On chart paper, create a "Who Keeps Us Safe?" list. Ask: "Who helped keep us safe during our jumping? Who helps keep us safe at school every day?" Record responses: teacher, nurse, principal, crossing guard, custodian. Discuss how staying in space bubbles kept everyone safe during jumping.
  6. Partner Jump and Compare (7 minutes): Students find a partner and take turns jumping for 15 seconds each while partner counts. They use manipulatives to show their totals and determine who jumped more, less, or equal. Circulate and listen to their comparison language.

Closing (5 minutes)

Have students sit in their space bubbles. Quick share: "Turn to someone near you and tell them one thing you learned about comparing numbers and one person who keeps us safe at school."

Quick Check: "Show me thumbs up if 25 is greater than 18. Point to an adult in our school who keeps us safe. Show me how big your space bubble is."

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students maintaining personal space and landing jumps safely with bent knees
  • Accurate counting and one-to-one correspondence when using manipulatives to represent jump totals
  • Correct use of comparison language: "more than," "less than," "greater than," "equal to"

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Reduce jumping time to 15 seconds and provide adult support for counting
  • Use smaller quantities (under 10) and manipulatives with clear visual differences
  • Allow modified jumps such as marching in place or arm movements if full jumping is difficult

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have them compare three different jump totals and put them in order from least to greatest
  • Challenge them to estimate how many jumps they think they can do before actually jumping
  • Ask them to find the difference between two jump totals using manipulatives

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pair with English-proficient buddy and provide visual cue cards showing "more," "less," "equal"
  • Use gestures and manipulatives extensively to support vocabulary development
  • Pre-teach key vocabulary with pictures: jump, count, more, less, safe, helper
