Shape Spotters Studio โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: K | Subject: Math, Visual Arts, Technology | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students hunt for circles, squares, and triangles in their classroom, then create artistic drawings on paper and tablets.

Standards

  • K.G.1 (Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe relative positions)
  • K.G.2 (Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size)
  • VA:Cr1.1.Ka (Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials)
  • VA:Cr2.2.Ka (Identify safe and non-toxic art materials, tools, and equipment)
  • TECH.K.1.d (Learn basic technology skills like turning on devices, using a mouse, and opening apps)
  • TECH.K.4.a (Use technology to create simple projects (drawings, stories))

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify circles, squares, and triangles in the classroom environment
  • Name each shape correctly using proper vocabulary
  • Draw and color shapes on paper using crayons and markers
  • Create digital drawings of shapes using tablet drawing apps
  • Explain where they found each shape in the classroom
  • Compare shapes they drew on paper with shapes they drew digitally

Supplies Needed

  • White paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Tablets or Chromebooks
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Draw a large circle, square, and triangle on the whiteboard. Point to each shape and have students call out the name together. Say: "Today we're going on a shape hunt right here in our classroom! Then we'll become artists and draw what we find."

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Shape Hunt Introduction (5 minutes): Show students the Shape Hunt Recording Sheet. Explain they will walk around the room looking for circles, squares, and triangles. Model by pointing out the circular clock, square window, or triangular pennant. Give each student a recording sheet and pencil.
  2. Classroom Shape Hunt (10 minutes): Let students move freely around the classroom to find shapes. Walk around to help them identify shapes and record their findings. Encourage them to look at furniture, decorations, books, and classroom supplies. Remind them to draw or write what they found in each section.
  3. Share Discoveries (5 minutes): Gather students back to the carpet. Have 4-5 students share one shape they found and where they found it. Record their responses on chart paper under "Circles We Found," "Squares We Found," and "Triangles We Found."
  4. Paper Drawing Time (15 minutes): Give each student white paper and access to crayons and markers. Have them draw the shapes they found, adding colors and details. Encourage them to draw the actual objects (like a circular clock face or square book) rather than just basic shapes. Walk around providing encouragement and shape vocabulary reinforcement.
  5. Tablet Drawing Setup (5 minutes): Help students open tablets and access the drawing app. Show them how to select drawing tools and colors. Demonstrate how to draw a circle by touching and dragging on the screen.
  6. Digital Art Creation (10 minutes): Students create digital drawings of the same shapes they drew on paper. Encourage them to try different colors and brush sizes. Circulate to provide technical support and shape vocabulary reinforcement. Save their work to a class folder.

Closing (5 minutes)

Have students hold up their paper drawings and show their tablet screens. Ask them to compare: "What was the same about drawing on paper and on the tablet? What was different?" Display several digital drawings on the classroom projector if available.

Quick Check: Point to objects around the room and ask "What shape is this?" Hold up student drawings and ask "What shapes do you see here?" Ask "Where did you find circles in our room?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly identifying and naming circles, squares, and triangles during the hunt
  • Accurate representation of shapes in both paper and digital drawings
  • Use of proper shape vocabulary when describing their discoveries and artwork

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Pair them with a buddy during the shape hunt for peer support
  • Provide shape templates or stencils for paper drawing portion
  • Offer additional verbal prompts and pointing cues during shape identification

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Ask them to find rectangles, ovals, or other shapes beyond the basic three
  • Have them count how many of each shape they found and create simple graphs
  • Encourage them to help classmates with tablet navigation and drawing techniques

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use physical gestures and tracing motions when teaching shape names
  • Provide visual shape cards with pictures and words in home language if possible
  • Encourage drawing and pointing to communicate findings when verbal language is limited
