Shape Art Portfolio Showcase โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: K | Subject: Math, Visual Arts, Technology | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create geometric shape art, curate their best pieces for a digital portfolio, and present their selections to classmates.

Standards

  • K.G.4 (Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes using informal language)
  • K.G.6 (Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes)
  • VA:Pr4.1.Ka (Select art objects for personal portfolio and display, explaining why they were chosen)
  • VA:Pr5.1.Ka (Explain the purpose of a portfolio or collection)
  • TECH.K.6.c (Use pictures and words to share ideas with others using technology)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify and name basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in their artwork
  • Create composite pictures by combining multiple geometric shapes
  • Select their best shape artwork based on given criteria
  • Explain their selection choices using simple reasoning
  • Use tablets to photograph their selected artwork for a digital portfolio
  • Present their portfolio selections to classmates using complete sentences

Supplies Needed

  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks
  • Crayons and markers
  • Tablets or Chromebooks
  • Chart paper

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students on the carpet and show examples of shape art from previous lessons. Ask: "What shapes do you see in this picture? How did the artist use circles and squares together?" Explain that today they will create new shape art and choose their best pieces for a special art show portfolio.

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Shape Art Creation (15 minutes): Students create 2-3 new artworks using pre-cut shapes or by cutting their own. Encourage combining shapes to make objects like houses (triangle + square), flowers (circles + rectangles), or animals. Circulate and ask: "What shapes are you using? How are you putting them together?"
  2. Portfolio Selection Setup (5 minutes): Post chart paper with selection criteria: "Pick artwork that: Uses 3 or more different shapes, Shows shapes working together, Makes you proud." Read criteria aloud and have students repeat.
  3. Individual Selection Process (10 minutes): Students lay out all their shape artwork from today and previous lessons. Guide them to choose 2-3 pieces using the posted criteria. Have them practice explaining one choice to a neighbor: "I picked this because..."
  4. Digital Portfolio Creation (10 minutes): In pairs, students use tablets to photograph their selected pieces. Show them how to hold the tablet steady and center the artwork. Save photos to individual student folders. Help with device navigation as needed.
  5. Presentation Preparation (5 minutes): Students practice their presentations using sentence starters: "I chose this artwork because..." and "This shows shapes working together when..." Model with your own example first.
  6. Portfolio Showcase (5 minutes): Half the class presents while others listen as an audience, then switch. Each presenter shows one piece and explains their choice. Audience members give thumbs up for clear explanations.

Closing (5 minutes)

Gather in a circle and celebrate the art show. Ask students to share one shape they used most often and why they liked working with it. Preview that portfolios will be shared with families.

Quick Check: "Name one shape in your portfolio. Why did you choose that artwork? What makes a good art portfolio?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly naming shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in their artwork and others' work
  • Evidence of intentional shape combination and composition in their art pieces
  • Clear reasoning when explaining portfolio selections using complete thoughts

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide pre-cut shapes and templates for easier construction
  • Use visual cue cards with shape names and pictures during discussions
  • Partner with stronger peers during portfolio selection and tablet use

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Encourage creating complex compositions with 5+ different shapes
  • Have them help classmates identify shapes and provide selection feedback
  • Ask them to describe shape attributes (sides, corners) during presentations

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Display visual vocabulary cards with shape names in multiple languages
  • Use gestures and pointing when describing shapes and selection criteria
  • Provide sentence frames for presentations: "I chose ___ because ___"
