Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify the author and illustrator of community helper books and describe their roles
- Match text details to corresponding illustrations in community helper books
- Name three community helpers (doctor, firefighter, dentist) and their jobs

- Chart paper
- Crayons and markers
- Construction paper
- Glue sticks
- Scissors
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students on the carpet. Show covers of community helper books and ask: "Who are these people? How do they help us?" Record initial responses on chart paper titled "Our Community Helpers."
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Author/Illustrator Introduction (8 minutes): Read one community helper book aloud. Stop after reading to point out author's name and illustrator's name. Explain: "The author writes the words that tell us information. The illustrator draws pictures that show us what the words mean." Have students repeat these roles.
- Words and Pictures Connection (12 minutes): Reread the same book, stopping at 3-4 pages. For each page, read the text first, then examine the illustration. Ask: "What do the author's words tell us? What do the illustrator's pictures show us? How do they work together?" Model connecting specific words to picture details.
- Then and Now Comparison (15 minutes): Create a T-chart on chart paper labeled "Community Helpers: Then and Now." Show pictures from books depicting historical and modern helpers. Guide discussion: "How did firefighters dress long ago? How do they dress now? What tools did doctors use then versus now?" Record student observations with simple drawings and words.
- Symbol Hunt (8 minutes): Look through the books again to find helper symbols (fire hat, stethoscope, dental tools, etc.). Ask: "What does this symbol tell us about what this person values or does?" Create a "Helper Symbols" section on chart paper with student-identified symbols.
- Helper Badge Creation (7 minutes): Give each student construction paper to create a badge for their chosen community helper. They draw the helper's main symbol and write (or dictate) one word describing what that helper does. Circulate to help students connect their badges to book illustrations.
Closing (5 minutes)
Students sit in a circle wearing their helper badges. Each student states their helper and one way they help the community, referencing what they learned from the books' words and pictures.
Quick Check: "Who writes the words in our books? Who draws the pictures? Name one way doctors help us that we learned about today."
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly identifying author vs. illustrator when prompted
- Students making specific connections between text details and illustrations ("The words say 'stethoscope' and the picture shows the doctor using it")
- Students contributing accurate comparisons between past and present helper tools, clothing, or methods
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide picture cards of community helpers to reference during discussions
- Pair with buddy for badge creation and allow drawing instead of writing
- Use books with very clear, simple illustrations that directly match text
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have them identify additional details in illustrations that aren't mentioned in the text
- Ask them to predict what tools future community helpers might use
- Encourage writing simple sentences about their chosen helper on their badge
ELL/ELD Support:
- Pre-teach key vocabulary (author, illustrator, stethoscope, helmet) with visual supports
- Use gestures and actions when discussing helper jobs (listening motion for doctor, spraying motion for firefighter)
- Allow responses in home language first, then support English translation
