Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students on carpet. Hold up one place-based book and say, "Today we're going on trips around the world through books! But first, let's remember the parts of our travel guides." Point to front cover, back cover, and title page, having students name each part.
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Book Exploration Stations (15 minutes): Set up 3-4 stations with different place books. Students rotate in small groups, identifying front cover, back cover, title page at each station. Circulate and ask "What new words do you see?" Record unfamiliar words on chart paper.
- New Word Discovery (8 minutes): Gather whole group. Review collected vocabulary words (desert, temple, village, etc.). For each word, ask "What do you think this means?" Use book pictures as clues. Create simple drawings next to each word on chart paper.
- Map Detective Work (10 minutes): Show world map/globe. Point to locations from books. Ask students to identify "Is this land or water?" Have volunteers come up and point to oceans, continents, islands. Connect to book locations: "The desert book showed this sandy land area."
- People Comparison Activity (10 minutes): Look at people in book illustrations. Create T-chart on chart paper: "Same/Different." Guide students to notice: Same - people have families, eat food, play games. Different - clothing, homes, languages, celebrations. Record student observations.
- Safety Circle Talk (5 minutes): Transition by saying, "When we learn about new places, we want to feel safe asking questions." Sit in circle. Ask: "Who are trusted adults you can talk to if something feels wrong?" List responses: teacher, parent, principal, etc.
- Safety Practice (2 minutes): Practice scenarios: "If someone makes you uncomfortable, what do you do?" Model and have students practice saying "No, I don't like that" and walking away. Emphasize telling a trusted adult immediately.
Closing (5 minutes)
Students draw one new thing they learned about places or people today. Share with a partner, using at least one new vocabulary word from the lesson.
Quick Check: Show me the front cover of your book. Point to land on our map. Tell me one trusted adult you can talk to.
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly identifying book parts when asked
- Students asking questions about unfamiliar vocabulary or attempting to use context clues
- Students accurately distinguishing between land and water features on maps
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Pair with stronger readers during book exploration stations
- Use books with clearer, simpler illustrations for vocabulary support
- Provide hand-over-hand guidance when pointing to map features
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Ask them to find additional vocabulary words and explain meanings to peers
- Have them identify specific countries or continents on the map
- Encourage them to make connections between multiple books about similar places
ELL/ELD Support:
- Focus on books with strong visual supports and minimal text
- Encourage use of home language when describing similarities to their own culture
- Provide sentence frames: "This looks like ___" or "In my family, we ___"
