Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Observe and record today's weather conditions using descriptive words
- Use weather nouns (sun, clouds, rain, snow) and verbs (shine, blow, fall, move) in speech and writing

- Tablets or Chromebooks
- White paper
- Crayons and markers
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students on carpet. Point to window and ask, "What do you notice about the weather today?" Record student responses on whiteboard using weather nouns and verbs. Circle the nouns in blue and verbs in red as you write them.
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Weather Word Bank Creation (8 minutes): Create a class weather word bank on chart paper. Write weather nouns (sun, clouds, rain, wind, snow) in one column and weather verbs (shines, blows, falls, moves, covers) in another. Have students act out each verb as you write it.
- Outdoor Weather Observation (10 minutes): Take students outside for 5 minutes to observe current weather. Guide them to look up, feel the air, and notice sounds. Return inside and have students share one thing they observed using the sentence starter "I see..." or "I feel..."
- Weather Recording Sheet (12 minutes): Distribute weather observation sheets. Students draw today's weather in the picture box and write or copy 2-3 weather words from the word bank. Circulate to help students spell words and encourage use of both nouns and verbs.
- Digital Weather Report Creation (15 minutes): Partner students with tablets/Chromebooks. Show them how to open a simple drawing or note-taking app. Students create a digital weather report by typing or drawing today's weather and recording one sentence like "The sun shines today" or "Clouds cover the sky."
- Weather Report Presentations (5 minutes): Have 4-5 student pairs share their digital weather reports with the class. Encourage listeners to identify the weather nouns and verbs they hear.
Closing (5 minutes)
Review the weather word bank created during class. Have students use hand motions to act out different weather verbs. Post today's weather observation sheet on a "Weather Watchers" bulletin board to start tracking patterns over time.
Quick Check: Ask students: "What weather words did we learn today?" "What verbs describe what the sun does?" "How can we use technology to share our weather observations?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly identifying and using weather nouns and verbs during discussions
- Accurate weather observations recorded on worksheets with appropriate pictures and words
- Successful creation and sharing of digital weather reports using technology tools
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide picture cards showing different weather conditions to support vocabulary
- Allow students to dictate their weather observations to a partner or teacher
- Offer sentence frames like "Today is ____" or "I see ____" for speaking and writing
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have students write complete sentences describing weather using adjectives (bright sun, gray clouds)
- Ask students to predict tomorrow's weather based on today's observations
- Challenge students to use weather words in different sentences or create weather riddles
ELL/ELD Support:
- Use visual weather symbols and gestures alongside spoken weather vocabulary
- Pair ELL students with strong English speakers for weather observation activities
- Encourage use of home language weather words alongside English terms
