Animal Home Builders β¨ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: K | Subject: Reading/ELA, Science, Technology | Duration: 60 minutes
π Description: Students explore how animals change their habitats, write complete sentences about animal homes using prepositions, and save digital work.
Standards
- K.W.6 (With guidance and support from adults, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing)
- K.L.1e (Use the most frequently occurring prepositions)
- K.L.1f (Produce and expand complete sentences in shared language activities)

- TECH.K.3.b (Begin to understand that not everything online is true)
- TECH.K.3.c (Save or collect digital items that help with learning)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify three ways animals change their environment to build homes
- Use prepositions (in, on, under, near) correctly when describing animal homes
- Write complete sentences about where animals build their homes
- Type simple sentences using tablets and save their work
- Explain how specific animals modify their surroundings (birds, beavers, rabbits)
- Demonstrate proper digital citizenship when using tablets for learning
Supplies Needed
- Tablets or Chromebooks
- Chart paper
- Crayons and markers
- White paper
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Show students your hands and pretend to be a bird building a nest. Say "I am building my nest IN the tree" while emphasizing the word "in." Ask students to guess what animal you are and where you live.
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Animal Home Discussion (8 minutes): Create a chart with three columns: "Animal," "Home," and "Where." Start with bird/nest/IN tree. Ask students for other examples. Add beaver/dam/ON river and rabbit/burrow/UNDER ground. Circle all preposition words.
- Movement Activity (7 minutes): Have students act out being different animals building homes. Call out "Birds build nests IN trees" and students flap arms and point up. "Beavers build dams ON rivers" - students pretend to stack sticks. "Rabbits dig burrows UNDER ground" - students crouch and pretend to dig.
- Sentence Building Practice (10 minutes): Write sentence frames on chart paper: "_____ build _____ _____ the _____." Model filling in "Birds build nests IN the tree." Have students suggest words for beaver and rabbit sentences. Practice reading completed sentences aloud together.
- Drawing Activity (10 minutes): Give each student paper and crayons. Have them draw one animal building or living in its home. Walk around and ask students to tell you about their drawing using complete sentences with prepositions.
- Tablet Writing (12 minutes): Open tablets and show students how to access the writing app. Demonstrate typing "Birds build nests in trees." Have students type one sentence about their drawing. Circulate to help with typing and spelling.
- Saving Work (3 minutes): Show students the save button. Demonstrate saving work with their name in the title. Help each student save their sentence. Explain that saving helps us keep our learning safe.
Closing (5 minutes)
Have volunteers share their sentences from the tablet. Ask the class to identify the preposition in each sentence by raising their hands when they hear it.
Quick Check: "Where do birds build nests?" "What word tells us where the beaver dam is?" "Show me how you save your work on the tablet."
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly using prepositions when speaking about animal homes
- Complete sentences with subject, verb, and prepositional phrase
- Successful navigation of tablet functions including typing and saving
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide sentence starters already typed on tablets
- Pair with tablet-proficient buddy for technology support
- Use picture cards showing animal homes for visual reference
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Write multiple sentences about different animals
- Add describing words to their sentences (red bird, big beaver)
- Research one additional animal home to share with class
ELL/ELD Support:
- Pre-teach vocabulary with visual cards before lesson
- Allow drawing with labels instead of full sentences initially
- Provide sentence frames with key words filled in
