Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students in circle. Say: "Today we're word scientists! We'll discover how the same action can make us feel different ways. Everyone stand up and WALK around our circle." After one lap: "Now STOMP around our circle. What felt different?"

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Movement Exploration (10 minutes): Call out action words one at a time: walk, march, stomp, tiptoe, skip, crawl. Have students perform each action. After each word, ask: "How did that make you feel? Happy? Excited? Sneaky? Strong?"
  2. Feeling Categories (10 minutes): Create four sections on chart paper labeled: "Happy Movements," "Angry Movements," "Quiet Movements," "Excited Movements." Write action words from Step 1 in appropriate categories with student input. Discuss why "stomp" might go under "angry" while "tiptoe" goes under "quiet."
  3. Opposite Actions (10 minutes): Have students stand. Call out an action word and have them do it, then do the opposite. Examples: "Walk fast... now walk slow!" "Take big steps... now tiny steps!" "Move loudly... now move quietly!" Write opposite pairs on whiteboard.
  4. Screen Break Discussion (5 minutes): Sit students down. Say: "We've been moving without screens! Sometimes our bodies and brains need breaks from tablets and computers. When might we need screen breaks?" Discuss: when eyes feel tired, after 20 minutes, when feeling restless. Also remind: "When we do use screens, we keep private information like our names and addresses to ourselves."
  5. Magnetic Letter Spelling (10 minutes): Set up magnetic letter trays around room. In small groups, students spell simple action words: run, hop, sit, walk. Start with 3-letter words, encourage sounding out letters. Rotate groups every 3 minutes.
  6. Digital Word Sort (5 minutes): Using tablets, show pre-loaded simple sorting activity with action word pictures. Students drag pictures into "Fast" or "Slow" categories. Limit to 5 minutes, then close tablets for screen break.

Closing (5 minutes)

Return to circle. Have each student choose one action word from today and demonstrate it silently while others guess. End with quiet "tiptoe" movements back to seats.

Quick Check: "Show me a happy movement... now show me its opposite. What's one time we should take a break from screens?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly matching movements to feeling categories during sorting activity
  • Ability to demonstrate opposite actions when called upon
  • Proper letter-sound connections when spelling with magnetic letters

  • Pair with movement buddy during action demonstrations
  • Provide only 2-3 letter magnetic letters for simpler words (go, run, sit)
