Number Line Target Toss Championship โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Math, Physical Education, Reading/ELA | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students practice mental addition and subtraction within 20 by throwing beanbags at number line targets and reading vowel-focused score cards.

Standards

  • 2.OA.2 (Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies)
  • 2.MD.6 (Represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram)
  • PE.2.1.4 (Throws underhand using a mature pattern)
  • 2.RF.3 (Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words)
  • 2.RF.3a (Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Add and subtract within 20 mentally using number line visualization strategies
  • Demonstrate proper underhand throwing technique to hit specific number line targets
  • Identify and distinguish between long and short vowel sounds in one-syllable words
  • Calculate total scores by combining multiple addition and subtraction problems
  • Read score cards containing words with various vowel patterns to determine game results

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Beanbags (3-5)
  • White paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Masking tape for floor lines

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students on the carpet and demonstrate underhand throwing motion. Show the large number line (0-20) posted on the wall and explain: "Today we're becoming number line athletes! You'll throw beanbags to land on numbers, then solve math problems AND read special score cards to win points."

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Setup Phase (5 minutes): Create a large floor number line using chart paper segments (0-20) taped in a straight line. Mark throwing lines with masking tape at 3, 5, and 7 feet from the number line. Post the wall number line as reference.
  2. Practice Round (8 minutes): Demonstrate proper underhand throwing form. Have students practice throwing beanbags from the closest line, aiming for numbers 5, 10, and 15. No scoring yet - focus on technique and accuracy.
  3. Game Rules Introduction (7 minutes): Explain the championship format: Each student gets 3 throws per round. They choose their starting number, then add or subtract based on where their beanbag lands. Write example on whiteboard: "Start at 8, throw and land on 5, choose to add (8+5=13) or subtract (8-5=3)."
  4. Score Card Reading (10 minutes): Introduce score cards with words containing long and short vowels. Model reading cards: "cake" (long a), "cat" (short a), "bike" (long i), "bit" (short i). Students must correctly identify the vowel sound to earn bonus points (2 points for long vowels, 1 point for short vowels).
  5. Championship Rounds (15 minutes): Divide class into teams of 3-4. Each student throws 3 beanbags, calculates their math problems mentally, then draws and reads a score card. Team members help verify math answers and vowel identification. Rotate through all teams.
  6. Final Scoring & Verification (5 minutes): Teams calculate total scores by adding individual scores plus bonus points from correctly identified vowel sounds. Use whiteboard to show sample calculations as teams work.

Closing (5 minutes)

Announce championship results and have students share their favorite number combinations. Review key strategies: "When adding, we move right on the number line. When subtracting, we move left."

Quick Check: Ask students: "If I start at 12 and subtract 7, what's my answer? Show me a thumbs up for long vowel, thumbs down for short vowel when I say 'hope.' What makes this game help us with math?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students mentally calculating addition and subtraction problems within 20 without using fingers or manipulatives
  • Proper underhand throwing form with appropriate follow-through toward number line targets
  • Accurate identification of long vs. short vowel sounds when reading score cards aloud

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Allow use of the wall number line for visual counting support during mental math
  • Provide score cards with simpler CVC words and clearer vowel sound patterns
  • Let students throw from the closest line (3 feet) for better accuracy

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Require students to create multi-step problems using three thrown numbers
  • Include score cards with more complex vowel patterns (ai, ea, oa)
  • Challenge them to throw from the farthest line (7 feet) for increased difficulty

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pair ELL students with bilingual buddies for score card reading support
  • Use visual cues and gestures when explaining long vs. short vowel sounds
  • Provide sentence frames: "I start with ___, I land on ___, so my answer is ___"
