Story Voices Studio โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Reading/ELA, Music, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create audio story recordings with expressive voices, design visual illustrations, and share empathy-focused stories.

Standards

  • 2.SL.5 (Create audio recordings of stories or poems; add drawings or other visual displays to stories or recounts of experiences when appropriate to clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings)
  • 2.SL.6 (Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested detail or clarification)
  • MU:Pr6.1.2a (Perform music for a specific purpose with expression and technical accuracy)
  • MU:Pr6.1.2b (Perform appropriately for the audience and purpose)
  • SEL.2.SOC.2 (Show empathy through words and actions)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Record a story or poem using expressive voice techniques with appropriate pacing and tone
  • Create visual illustrations that clarify the main ideas and emotions in their chosen story
  • Demonstrate empathy by selecting stories that show understanding of others' feelings
  • Perform their recorded story with musical expression and technical accuracy for an audience
  • Use complete sentences to explain how their illustrations connect to their story's empathetic message

Supplies Needed

  • Tablets or Chromebooks
  • Construction paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Simple children's books or poems about kindness/empathy (5-6 different titles)

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Begin by modeling different voice expressions. Read the same sentence ("I'm so sorry you're sad") in three ways: flat/monotone, overly dramatic, and with genuine empathy. Ask students which voice made them feel the speaker truly cared. Explain that today they'll become "Story Voice Artists" who help others feel emotions through their recordings.

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Voice Expression Practice (8 minutes): Write emotion words on the board (happy, sad, excited, worried, caring). Have students practice saying "Hello, friend" in each emotional tone. Use the mirror for students to see their facial expressions matching their voices.
  2. Story Selection and Planning (10 minutes): Display empathy-focused books/poems around the room. Students choose one that speaks to them about caring for others. They complete the Story Planning Sheet, identifying the main emotion and how they'll show empathy through their voice.
  3. Illustration Creation (12 minutes): Students create 2-3 drawings on construction paper showing key emotional moments from their story. Remind them that pictures should help others understand the feelings in their story. Circulate to help students connect visual elements to emotional content.
  4. Recording Practice (8 minutes): Students practice reading their chosen story aloud, focusing on pacing, volume changes, and emotional expression. Partners provide feedback using the Recording Checklist before moving to devices.
  5. Audio Recording (10 minutes): Using tablets/Chromebooks with built-in recording apps, students record their stories. Encourage 2-3 takes to improve expression. Teacher assists with technology as needed, emphasizing clear speaking and appropriate pacing.
  6. Showcase Preparation (2 minutes): Students arrange their illustrations in order and prepare to share both their recording and artwork, practicing how they'll explain their empathy message.

Closing (5 minutes)

Three volunteer students share their recordings and illustrations with the class. After each performance, ask the audience: "How did this story help you understand someone else's feelings?" Post all illustrations on the chart paper to create a "Wall of Empathy Stories."

Quick Check: Ask students: "What made your voice sound caring in your recording? How do your pictures help others understand feelings? Name one way this story shows empathy."

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students adjusting their voice tone and pacing during practice to match story emotions
  • Illustrations that clearly connect to emotional content and demonstrate understanding of empathy themes
  • Use of complete sentences when explaining how their story shows caring for others' feelings

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide shorter poems or story excerpts (4-6 sentences) instead of full stories
  • Allow students to work with a buddy for recording, taking turns reading sentences
  • Offer pre-drawn emotion face templates that students can color and customize for their illustrations

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Encourage students to add simple sound effects or background humming to enhance their recording's emotional impact
  • Have them create a "Director's Commentary" explaining their artistic choices for voice and visual elements
  • Challenge them to write their own short empathy story for recording instead of using provided books

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Provide emotion vocabulary cards with pictures and allow students to practice key phrases before recording
  • Pair ELL students with strong English speakers for practice sessions and peer feedback
  • Encourage use of home language for internal thinking, with English for final recording and sharing
