Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify at least two contributions made by American heroes (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Jackie Robinson)
  • Write irregular plural nouns correctly (men/man, children/child, people/person) in sentences about heroes
  • Use reflexive pronouns (myself, himself, herself) when writing about heroes' actions
  • Explain two healthy behaviors that helped heroes succeed and their benefits
  • Describe consequences of unhealthy choices that could have prevented heroic achievements

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • White paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Pencils

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Display photos of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Jackie Robinson on the board. Ask: "What do you notice about these people? What makes someone a hero?" Record student responses on chart paper titled "What Makes a Hero?"

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Hero Introduction (8 minutes): Share key facts about each hero's contributions. Washington led our country to freedom, Lincoln kept our nation together, Robinson broke baseball's color barrier. Write these on the board with simple drawings.
  2. Grammar Mini-Lesson (7 minutes): Write on board: "One man became president. Many men followed his example." Highlight man/men. Practice with child/children and person/people using hero examples. Have students say sentences aloud together.
  3. Reflexive Pronoun Practice (8 minutes): Model sentences: "Washington trained himself to be a leader." "Lincoln taught himself to read." "Robinson pushed himself to succeed." Students practice saying similar sentences with hand gestures pointing to themselves.
  4. Healthy Habits Discussion (12 minutes): Create T-chart on chart paper: "Healthy Choices/Benefits" and "Unhealthy Choices/Consequences." Discuss how heroes stayed strong through exercise, eating well, getting sleep, and persevering. What if they hadn't made these choices?
  5. Hero Biography Writing (10 minutes): Students choose one hero and complete the Hero Biography template. They must include: hero's contribution, one irregular plural noun, one reflexive pronoun, and one healthy habit that helped them succeed.
  6. Peer Sharing (5 minutes): Students pair up and read their biographies to each other, listening for grammar targets and healthy habits.

Closing (5 minutes)

Students stand and share one healthy habit they can practice like their chosen hero. Create class commitment: "We will take care of ourselves like heroes do!"

Quick Check: "Name one irregular plural." "Use 'himself' in a sentence." "What healthy choice helped your hero succeed?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly using man/men, child/children, person/people in spoken and written responses
  • Proper usage of reflexive pronouns with correct subject-pronoun agreement
  • Clear connections made between heroes' healthy choices and their achievements

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters: "My hero is ____. He/she helped himself/herself by ____."
  • Use picture cards showing singular/plural pairs for irregular nouns
  • Allow drawing plus one sentence instead of full biography

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Write about two heroes and compare their healthy habits
  • Include additional irregular plurals (feet/foot, teeth/tooth) in their writing
  • Research and add one new fact about their chosen hero's daily routine

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pre-teach vocabulary with visual cards showing healthy habits
  • Provide biography template with more sentence frames
  • Allow native language discussion before English writing
