Time and Money Research Station โจ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Reading/ELA, Math | Duration: 45 minutes
๐ Description: Students conduct shared research about time and money by rotating through stations to answer questions and explain mathematical strategies.
Standards
- 2.W.7 (Participate in shared research and writing projects)
- 2.W.8 (Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question)
- 2.NBT.9 (Explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations)
- 2.MD.7 (Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.)
- 2.MD.8 (Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Participate in shared research by gathering information from provided sources to answer time and money questions
- Tell time to the nearest five minutes using analog clocks
- Solve word problems involving coins and dollar bills using addition and subtraction
- Explain why their addition and subtraction strategies work using place value
- Record research findings on graphic organizers with partners
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Counting manipulatives
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- Tablets or Chromebooks
- Paper (white)
- Pencils
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Introduce students as "Time and Money Researchers" who will work in pairs to answer important questions. Show the three research stations posted around the room and explain that each pair will rotate through all stations, recording their findings.
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- (5 minutes) Divide class into pairs and give each pair a Research Recording Sheet. Assign starting stations so groups are evenly distributed across the three stations.
- (10 minutes - Station 1: Time Detective) Partners use tablets to research "What time do animals wake up?" and practice telling time to 5-minute intervals on analog clock images. They record 3 findings on their sheet.
- (10 minutes - Station 2: Money Problem Solvers) Partners solve word problems posted on chart paper using counting manipulatives as coins. They must show their addition/subtraction work and explain their strategy in writing.
- (10 minutes - Station 3: Strategy Explainers) Partners choose one money problem from Station 2 and create a visual explanation on the whiteboard showing why their addition or subtraction strategy works, using place value concepts.
- Rotate every 10 minutes Ring a bell and have pairs move clockwise to the next station, bringing their recording sheets with them.
Closing (5 minutes)
Gather in a circle and have each pair share one interesting time fact they researched and one money problem strategy they used. Post completed research sheets on a "Researchers' Wall."
Quick Check: Show an analog clock set to 3:25 - can students tell the time? Give a simple money problem: "I have 2 dimes and 3 pennies. How much money do I have?" - can students solve it and explain their strategy?
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly reading analog clocks to 5-minute intervals and recording time facts from research
- Pairs working collaboratively to solve money word problems and showing their mathematical thinking
- Students explaining their addition and subtraction strategies using place value language ("I added the tens first, then the ones")
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide analog clocks that only show times on the 5-minute marks (3:00, 3:05, 3:10, etc.)
- Start with money problems using only one type of coin before mixing coin types
- Allow students to draw pictures or use manipulatives to explain their strategies instead of writing
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Research time zones and figure out what time it is in different parts of the world when animals wake up
- Create their own money word problems for other students to solve
- Compare different addition and subtraction strategies to determine which is most efficient for different problems
ELL/ELD Support:
- Provide sentence frames: "The time is ____" and "I solved this by ____"
- Pair ELL students with strong English speakers for collaborative research
- Use visual aids showing coin names and values posted at the money station
