Digital Design Teams โจ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Technology, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 45 minutes
๐ Description: Students follow a design process to create digital projects while practicing collaboration skills and conflict resolution strategies with partners.
Standards
- TECH.2.4.a (Follow a design process to plan and create projects)
- TECH.2.4.b (Choose appropriate digital tools for design projects)
- SEL.2.RS.4 (Build positive relationships with peers and adults)
- SEL.2.RS.5 (Use conflict resolution strategies independently)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Follow the four steps of the design process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create) to complete a digital project
- Select appropriate digital tools from available options for their design project
- Work collaboratively with a partner using positive communication strategies
- Apply "Stop, Listen, Solve" conflict resolution when disagreements occur during teamwork
Supplies Needed
- Tablets or Chromebooks
- Chart paper
- Crayons and markers
- White paper
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Display the Design Process poster on chart paper: Ask โ Imagine โ Plan โ Create. Say: "Today we're becoming design teams! You'll work with a partner to create a digital project about your favorite animal. But first, let's practice being good teammates." Model the "Stop, Listen, Solve" hand signals with students.
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Partner Formation & Team Building (5 minutes): Assign partners strategically. Have pairs sit together and complete the "Getting to Know My Teammate" activity on paper. Each partner shares their favorite animal and one thing they're good at.
- Design Process Step 1 - Ask (5 minutes): Partners discuss: "What do we want people to learn about our favorite animals?" Write their question on paper. Circulate and help teams focus their ideas. Example: "What makes penguins special?"
- Design Process Step 2 - Imagine (8 minutes): Teams brainstorm how to share their animal information. Show digital tool options on your device: drawing app, presentation slides, or recording a video. Partners must agree on ONE tool together. If disagreements arise, prompt them to use "Stop, Listen, Solve."
- Design Process Step 3 - Plan (7 minutes): Using paper and markers, teams sketch their digital project plan. What will it look like? What information will they include? Both partners contribute ideas to the sketch.
- Design Process Step 4 - Create (8 minutes): Partners use their chosen digital tool to create their project. One person operates the device while the other gives ideas, then they switch halfway through. Monitor for collaboration and conflict resolution.
- Share & Reflect (2 minutes): Each team shows their project to another team nearby. Partners take turns presenting their work.
Closing (5 minutes)
Gather in a circle. Ask teams to share one thing that went well with their teamwork and one challenge they solved together. Connect back to the design process by asking: "Which step was hardest for your team?"
Quick Check: "Show me thumbs up if you followed all four design steps. Point to your partner if they were a good teammate today. Raise your hand if you used Stop, Listen, Solve."
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Teams referencing the design process steps (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create) as they work
- Students using positive communication like "What do you think?" or "Let's try your idea"
- Partners applying "Stop, Listen, Solve" when disagreements occur during collaboration
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Pair with a patient, supportive partner and provide sentence starters for collaboration
- Offer pre-drawn planning templates with boxes for each design step
- Allow extra time for the planning step before moving to digital creation
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Encourage teams to combine multiple digital tools in their final project
- Have them create a presentation explaining which design step was most important
- Ask them to help other teams practice conflict resolution strategies
ELL/ELD Support:
- Provide visual cards showing the design process steps with pictures
- Allow students to use their home language during planning discussions
- Pair with English-fluent partners who can model academic vocabulary
