Digital Storytellers Studio โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Technology, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create multimedia stories using tablets, learn to choose appropriate digital tools, and practice safe communication decisions.

Standards

  • TECH.2.6.a (Choose digital tools that match communication goals)
  • TECH.2.6.b (Create original multimedia content)
  • SEL.2.RDM.3 (Apply problem-solving steps to make good choices)
  • SEL.2.RDM.4 (Make decisions that are safe and responsible)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Select appropriate digital tools (camera, drawing app, voice recorder) to match their storytelling goals
  • Create an original multimedia story combining pictures, drawings, and audio
  • Apply the STOP-THINK-ACT steps when making digital communication choices
  • Identify safe and responsible behaviors when creating and sharing digital content

Supplies Needed

  • Tablets or Chromebooks
  • Chart paper
  • Markers
  • Paper (white)

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students on the carpet. Show three different storytelling tools: a book with pictures, a tablet with drawing app open, and a voice recorder. Ask: "If you wanted to tell a story about your weekend, which tool would help you share it best? Why?" Introduce today's mission: becoming digital storytellers who make smart, safe choices.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Tool Matching Game (8 minutes): Create a chart titled "Communication Goals & Digital Tools." Present scenarios: "Tell about a funny pet," "Show how to make a sandwich," "Share your favorite song." Have students suggest which digital tools (camera, drawing app, voice recorder) match each goal. Record responses on chart.
  2. Safety First Discussion (5 minutes): Introduce the STOP-THINK-ACT decision-making steps. Post on chart: STOP (pause before sharing), THINK (is this safe and kind?), ACT (make the right choice). Practice with scenarios: "Should I include my address in my story?" "Is it okay to take a picture of my classmate without asking?"
  3. Story Planning (7 minutes): Students choose their story topic from three options: "My Favorite Family Tradition," "A Kind Act I Did," or "Something New I Learned." They sketch their story plan on paper, deciding which digital tools they'll need. Circulate to approve plans.
  4. Digital Creation Time (12 minutes): Students work in pairs with tablets to create their multimedia stories. They can take photos, use drawing apps, or record short audio clips. Remind them to use STOP-THINK-ACT before adding each element. Set timer and give 2-minute warning.
  5. Peer Review (3 minutes): Partners check each other's work using the safety checklist: "Is this kind? Would I be comfortable sharing this with my family? Did I ask permission to include others?"

Closing (5 minutes)

Have 2-3 volunteers share their digital stories with the class. Celebrate their tool choices and safe decisions. Remind students that good digital storytellers always think before they create and share.

Quick Check: "Name one digital tool that helps tell stories. What's the first step in STOP-THINK-ACT? What should you do before including someone else in your digital story?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly matching digital tools to communication purposes during the opening game
  • Appropriate application of STOP-THINK-ACT steps when making content decisions
  • Safe and respectful choices when creating multimedia content (asking permission, appropriate topics)

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide story starter templates with picture prompts to guide topic selection
  • Partner with more tech-savvy students for tablet navigation support
  • Offer choice between creating stories about familiar topics like family or pets

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Create stories that combine all three digital tools (photo, drawing, audio) effectively
  • Help teach tablet skills to classmates who need extra support
  • Add text captions or titles to their multimedia stories

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Allow students to tell stories in their home language with visual supports
  • Provide vocabulary cards with key digital tool names and pictures
  • Encourage use of drawings and photos to communicate when words are challenging
