Healthy Choices Paddle Power โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students identify health decisions, practice asking for help, and learn paddle striking skills while expressing feelings about physical activity.

Standards

  • HE.2.5.1 (Identify situations when a health-related decision is needed)
  • HE.2.5.2 (Identify when help is needed to make a health decision)
  • HE.2.5.3 (Explain how family, friends, and trusted adults can affect health decisions)
  • PE.2.1.8 (Strikes an object upward with short-handled implement)
  • PE.2.4.4 (Expresses personal feelings about participation in physical activity)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify three situations where health decisions are needed
  • Explain when to ask trusted adults for help with health choices
  • Describe how family and friends influence health decisions
  • Strike a beanbag upward using a paddle motion with their hand
  • Express their feelings about participating in physical activities using complete sentences

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Beanbags (3-5)
  • Construction paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Plastic paddles or paper plates

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students on the carpet and show them a scenario card: "You feel sick at school." Ask: "What decision do you need to make? Who could help you?" Record initial responses on chart paper titled "Health Decisions We Make."

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Health Decision Scenarios (10 minutes): Present three scenarios on the whiteboard: "Choosing what to eat for lunch," "Feeling scared about going to the doctor," and "A friend wants you to try something that might be unsafe." Have students turn and talk to identify the health decision needed and who could help.
  2. Helper Web Creation (8 minutes): On chart paper, draw a circle labeled "ME" in the center. Ask students to name trusted helpers for health decisions. Draw lines to circles labeled "Family," "Teachers," "Doctor," "School Nurse." Discuss when each helper is most useful.
  3. Paddle Practice Setup (5 minutes): Move to open space. Demonstrate striking motion using your hand as a paddle - fingers together, flat palm, gentle upward motion. Have students practice the arm motion without objects, emphasizing control and gentle force.
  4. Beanbag Striking (8 minutes): Give each student a beanbag and paddle. Students practice striking beanbags gently upward, trying to keep them close to their bodies. Emphasize safety and controlled movements. Rotate equipment if needed.
  5. Feelings Check-in (4 minutes): Have students sit with their equipment. Ask them to complete the sentence starter: "When I play this activity, I feel _____ because _____." Accept all feelings - excited, nervous, proud, frustrated - and validate each response.

Closing (5 minutes)

Return to the carpet. Have students draw one health decision they might face on construction paper and write one trusted helper's name. Share with a partner.

Quick Check: "Name one health decision kids our age make. Who is one person who can help you? Show me your striking motion with your hand."

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly identifying decisions that affect their health and safety
  • Appropriate striking form with controlled upward motion and flat paddle surface
  • Use of complete sentences when expressing feelings about physical activity participation

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence frames: "I need help when _____" and "I feel _____ when I play because _____"
  • Use larger, softer beanbags and allow two-handed striking initially
  • Offer visual cue cards showing trusted helpers with pictures and words

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have students create their own health decision scenarios for classmates to solve
  • Practice striking beanbags to specific target heights or into designated areas
  • Write a short paragraph describing strategies for making good health choices

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use visual aids showing different trusted helpers and health situations
  • Pair with English-proficient buddies for turn-and-talk activities
  • Allow use of native language to express feelings, then help translate to English
