My Healthy Habit Goal Tracker ✨ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 45 minutes

πŸ“ Description: Students create personal health goal trackers, practice physical activities, and learn how food provides energy for their bodies.

Standards

  • HE.2.6.4 (Create a plan to achieve a personal health goal)
  • HE.2.6.5 (Track and monitor progress toward a health goal)
  • HE.2.6.6 (Describe how effort and persistence help achieve health goals)
  • HE.2.7.2 (Evaluate ability to perform healthy and safe practices)
  • HE.2.7.3 (Explain the importance of developing healthy habits)
  • PE.2.4.3 (Recognizes that food provides energy for physical activity)
  • PE.2.4.4 (Expresses personal feelings about participation in physical activity)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Create a personal health goal tracker with at least 3 healthy habits
  • Explain why healthy habits are important for their body and life
  • Identify how food gives their body energy for physical activities
  • Express their feelings about participating in physical activity using words or pictures
  • Demonstrate persistence by completing physical challenges
  • Track their progress on healthy habits using counting manipulatives

Supplies Needed

  • White paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Counting manipulatives (cubes, bears, or counters)
  • Beanbags (3-5)
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Begin by having students stand and stretch. Ask: "What did you eat for breakfast today? How does food help your body?" Write student responses on the whiteboard. Explain that today they'll become "Health Goal Champions" by creating their own goal trackers.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Food and Energy Discussion (5 minutes): Show students how to march in place, then ask them to stop. Explain: "Food is like fuel for a car - it gives our bodies energy to move, play, and think!" Have students name healthy foods that give them energy. Write examples on chart paper.
  2. Physical Activity Challenge (8 minutes): Set up 3 beanbag toss stations around the room. Students rotate through stations, attempting to toss beanbags into containers. After each attempt, ask: "How do you feel right now? Excited? Tired? Strong?" Have students share their feelings with a partner.
  3. Create Health Goal Trackers (15 minutes): Give each student white paper. Have them fold it into thirds to create three sections labeled "Eat Healthy Foods," "Move My Body," and "Take Care of Myself." Students draw pictures in each section showing their goals (eating fruits/vegetables, playing outside, brushing teeth, etc.).
  4. Set Up Tracking System (4 minutes): Give each student 10 counting manipulatives. Explain: "Each day you complete a healthy habit, you'll move one counter to your 'Success' pile. This is how you track your progress!" Demonstrate by moving counters from one side of their desk to another.
  5. Practice Persistence Activity (3 minutes): Have students attempt to balance on one foot for 10 seconds. If they fall, encourage them to try again. Discuss: "When we keep trying even when something is hard, that's called persistence. Persistence helps us reach our health goals!"

Closing (5 minutes)

Students sit in a circle holding their goal trackers. Each student shares one healthy habit they want to work on this week. Remind them that healthy habits help their bodies grow strong and give them energy for fun activities.

Quick Check: Ask students: "What gives your body energy?" "Why are healthy habits important?" "How will you track your progress?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly identifying that food provides energy for physical activity
  • Students expressing feelings about physical activity using appropriate vocabulary
  • Students demonstrating understanding of goal-setting by creating realistic health goals on their trackers

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide pre-drawn goal tracker templates with picture prompts
  • Use fewer counting manipulatives (5 instead of 10) for easier tracking
  • Pair with a buddy for physical activity stations

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Add a fourth section to their goal tracker for "Helping Others Stay Healthy"
  • Have them create a weekly schedule showing when they'll work on each goal
  • Ask them to explain how different foods provide different types of energy

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Provide visual cards showing healthy habits and feelings vocabulary
  • Allow students to draw pictures instead of writing words on their trackers
  • Model physical activities and tracking system multiple times before student practice
