Health Champions Circle โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 2 | Subject: Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students practice encouraging healthy choices through movement games and create visual reminders to support classmates in making good decisions.

Standards

  • HE.2.8.1 (Encourage others to make healthy choices)
  • HE.2.8.2 (Demonstrate ways to support others in avoiding unhealthy behaviors)
  • PE.2.3.3 (Works cooperatively with others)
  • PE.2.3.4 (Recognizes the role of rules and etiquette in physical activity)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate three ways to encourage friends to make healthy choices through words and actions
  • Practice supportive language that helps others avoid unhealthy behaviors
  • Work cooperatively with teammates during physical activities while following established rules
  • Create visual reminders that advocate for healthy choices in their classroom community

Supplies Needed

  • Beanbags (3-5)
  • Chart paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • Construction paper

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students in a circle on the floor. Ask: "What does it mean to be a champion for someone?" Listen to responses, then explain: "Today we're becoming Health Champions - people who use their words and actions to help others make healthy choices. We'll practice this through games and create reminders for our classroom."

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Healthy Choice Brainstorm (5 minutes): On chart paper, create two columns: "Healthy Choices" and "Encouraging Words." Have students share healthy choices (drinking water, exercising, eating vegetables, getting sleep) while you record them. Then brainstorm encouraging phrases like "You've got this!" "Great choice!" "I'll do it with you!"
  2. Champion Circle Rules (3 minutes): Establish movement activity rules together: listen to teammates, take turns, use kind words, and help others succeed. Post these on chart paper where everyone can see them.
  3. Beanbag Encouragement Pass (7 minutes): Students stand in circle. Pass beanbags while sharing encouraging phrases from your chart. When a student receives a beanbag, they must give an encouraging phrase to the next person before passing. Rotate through multiple rounds, emphasizing supportive tone and body language.
  4. Healthy Choice Relay (10 minutes): Divide class into teams of 4-5. Place beanbags at opposite end of room. Teams take turns: one student runs to get beanbag, returns, and shares one healthy choice with their team. Teammates must respond with encouraging words before next person goes. Emphasize teamwork and following rules.
  5. Problem-Solving Scenarios (5 minutes): Present situations: "Your friend wants to skip recess to play video games" or "Someone offers unhealthy snacks." Have pairs practice supportive responses that help friends make better choices without being mean or bossy.
  6. Health Champion Badges (5 minutes): Give each student construction paper to create a "Health Champion" badge. They draw or write one way they will encourage others to be healthy. Circulate to help students brainstorm specific, actionable ideas.

Closing (5 minutes)

Students sit in circle wearing their badges. Each shares one encouraging phrase they'll use this week to help a friend make healthy choices. End with class chant: "Health Champions, that's who we are! We help our friends shine like a star!"

Quick Check: Ask students: "How can we encourage friends without being bossy? What's one rule that helped our games work well? How will you be a Health Champion tomorrow?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students using encouraging language spontaneously during activities
  • Cooperative behavior and rule-following during movement games
  • Ability to suggest supportive responses to scenario problems

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters like "You could try..." or "I think you're great when you..."
  • Partner with confident speakers during scenario practice
  • Use pictures or symbols on badges for non-writers

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have them demonstrate leadership roles during team activities
  • Ask them to create encouraging chants or songs for the class
  • Challenge them to think of ways to encourage healthy choices at home

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use visual cues and gestures when modeling encouraging phrases
  • Allow drawing or native language on badges with English translation
  • Pair with bilingual buddies during partner activities
