Sound Sorting Circle Time and Class Choice Book โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: K | Subject: Reading/ELA, Health Education, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 60 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students practice distinguishing similar sounds while creating and sharing a class book about helpful and unhelpful choices.

Standards

  • K.RF.3d (Distinguish between similarly spelled words by identifying the sounds of the letters that differ)
  • K.RF.4 (Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding)
  • HE.K.2.5 (Identify people and things that can lead to unhealthy choices)
  • SEL.K.RS.2 (Take turns and share with others during play and work)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Identify the different sounds in similar word pairs like cat/cap and bat/bag
  • Take turns reading pages from a class-created book
  • Distinguish between helpful and unhelpful choices through discussion and examples
  • Share materials and participate respectfully during group reading activities

Supplies Needed

  • Magnetic letters w/metal tray
  • Chart paper
  • Crayons and markers
  • White paper
  • Picture cards for word pairs (cat/cap, bat/bag, etc.)

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students in circle. Show magnetic letters c-a-t on tray. Say "Listen carefully - CAT!" Change the 't' to 'p'. "Now listen - CAP! What changed?" Have students listen for the different ending sounds.

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Sound Sorting Game (15 minutes): Using magnetic letters, build word pairs (cat/cap, bat/bag, mat/map). Have students take turns changing one letter and saying both words aloud. Emphasize listening to the different sounds.
  2. Picture Card Matching (10 minutes): Show picture cards. Students work in pairs to match similar sounding words, taking turns placing cards and saying the words clearly to their partner.
  3. Choice Discussion Circle (10 minutes): Ask "What choices help us? What choices don't help us?" Record student responses on chart paper in two columns: "Helpful Choices" and "Unhelpful Choices."
  4. Class Book Creation (10 minutes): Give each student one sheet of white paper. They draw and write about one helpful choice or one unhelpful choice. Circulate to help with spelling and encourage invented spelling.
  5. Book Assembly (3 minutes): Collect pages and quickly staple them together with a chart paper cover titled "Our Class Choice Book."
  6. Shared Reading Time (2 minutes): Begin reading the class book together, with different students taking turns reading their pages aloud to the group.

Closing (5 minutes)

Return to circle with completed class book. Have 2-3 students share their pages. Remind class that tomorrow they'll continue taking turns reading from their book.

Quick Check: "Tell me a word that sounds like 'bat' but ends differently." "Name one helpful choice from our book." "How did we share and take turns today?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly identifying the different ending sounds in word pairs during magnetic letter activities
  • Students taking appropriate turns during partner work and group discussions without teacher prompting
  • Students able to categorize choices as helpful or unhelpful with simple explanations

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Pair with stronger readers during picture card matching
  • Allow drawing only for book pages with verbal explanation to teacher
  • Use exaggerated pronunciation when demonstrating word pairs

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have them create their own word pairs with magnetic letters
  • Encourage writing complete sentences in their book pages
  • Ask them to help facilitate turn-taking during group activities

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use picture cards alongside spoken words for all vocabulary
  • Allow students to draw their choices first, then add words or labels
  • Pair with English-proficient buddies for all partner activities
