Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Begin with a quick poll: "Raise your hand if you've ever wanted something but couldn't decide if it was worth buying." Connect this to today's focus on smart money and health decisions. Post the 4-Step Decision Process on the whiteboard: 1) Identify the choice, 2) Consider options, 3) Think about consequences, 4) Decide and evaluate.
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Market Setup (8 minutes): Divide class into 4 groups. Two groups become "stores" selling healthy snacks (apples, granola bars) and less healthy options (candy, chips). Use construction paper to create product signs. Give remaining two groups 10 counting manipulatives each as "money." Post initial prices: healthy snacks $3, less healthy $2.
- Round 1 Shopping (5 minutes): Customer groups shop using the 4-step decision process. They must write their choice and reasoning on paper before purchasing. Observe which products sell most.
- Supply and Demand Demo (7 minutes): Announce a "health awareness week" - high demand for healthy snacks! Healthy snack stores can only sell 3 items total (low supply). Watch prices rise to $4-5. Less healthy snacks drop to $1 due to low demand. Discuss what's happening with prices.
- Round 2 Shopping (5 minutes): Customer groups shop again with new prices. Have them use the decision-making steps, especially considering health consequences of their choices.
- Entrepreneur Challenge (7 minutes): Each group brainstorms a new healthy business idea that could succeed in this market. They create a simple business plan: What product? Why will people want it? How much will it cost? Present ideas briefly.
- Decision Dilemmas (3 minutes): Present scenarios where students need adult help: "Your friend offers you a supplement to help you run faster" or "You want to try a new diet you saw online." Discuss when to ask for help.
Closing (5 minutes)
Review how supply and demand affected prices in our market. Connect to real life: when healthy foods are in high demand, prices can rise, but smart consumers still consider health benefits in their decisions.
Quick Check: "What happens to price when demand is high and supply is low? Name one step in good decision-making. When should you ask an adult for help with health choices?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly explaining price changes during supply/demand shifts
- Written reasoning showing use of the 4-step decision process
- Identification of appropriate times to seek adult guidance for health decisions
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide the decision-making steps printed on individual cards
- Partner struggling students with stronger peers during market simulation
- Use visual cues and gestures when explaining supply and demand concepts
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have them calculate percentage price changes between rounds
- Ask them to predict what might happen with different supply/demand scenarios
- Challenge them to create more detailed business plans including marketing strategies
ELL/ELD Support:
- Pre-teach key vocabulary: supply, demand, entrepreneur, consequences
- Use visual representations and gestures for economic concepts
- Pair ELL students with bilingual peers when possible
