Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Display incomplete sentences on the board: "Running fast." "I love soccer it is fun we play every day." Ask students to identify what's wrong and how to fix them. Introduce the challenge: "Today we'll become Sentence Champions while training our bodies like athletes!"
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- (5 minutes) Set up three stations around the room with chart paper. Station 1: "Fragment Fixers," Station 2: "Run-on Repair," Station 3: "Fitness Champions." Divide class into three groups of 6-8 students.
- (8 minutes) Station 1 - Fragment Fixers: Students read sentence fragments on chart paper and rewrite them as complete sentences using frequently confused words correctly. Example: "Too the store" becomes "I went to the store with my two friends." While waiting their turn, students practice underhand tosses with beanbags into a designated target area.
- (8 minutes) Station 2 - Run-on Repair: Students break apart run-on sentences and rewrite them with proper punctuation and capitalization. Example: "we went swimming it was hot the water felt good" becomes "We went swimming because it was hot. The water felt good." Students practice overhand throws while discussing which throw works best for different distances.
- (8 minutes) Station 3 - Fitness Champions: Students write complete sentences describing each component of health-related fitness while demonstrating chest passes. They must use proper capitalization and avoid fragments. Example: "Cardiovascular endurance helps your heart stay strong during exercise." Practice different throwing techniques based on imaginary game situations.
- (3 minutes) Groups rotate to next station. Repeat rotation process until all groups complete all three stations.
- (3 minutes) Final rotation - groups move to their third and final station.
Closing (5 minutes)
Gather students in a circle. Each group shares one corrected sentence and demonstrates one throwing technique they learned. Connect language skills to physical skills: "Just like complete sentences need all their parts, good throws need all the right body movements!"
Quick Check: "Show me an underhand toss motion. Name one component of fitness. Fix this fragment: 'Playing basketball.'"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly identifying missing subjects or predicates in fragments and adding appropriate parts
- Proper throwing form with follow-through and appropriate force for different distances
- Use of capital letters at sentence beginnings and correct punctuation at sentence endings in their written work
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide sentence starters and templates for fragment correction
- Use shorter, simpler run-on sentences with clear breaks
- Allow students to work with partners for both writing and throwing activities
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have students create their own fragments and run-ons for classmates to fix
- Add complex frequently confused words like affect/effect or accept/except
- Challenge them to explain why different throwing techniques work better in specific game situations
ELL/ELD Support:
- Provide visual charts showing complete sentence structure with subject and predicate examples
- Use gestures and demonstrations for fitness vocabulary and throwing techniques
- Allow native language discussion before writing responses in English
