Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Display 3-4 famous artworks on the whiteboard. Ask students to share what they notice about each piece and what they think the artist was trying to communicate. Explain that today they'll become digital artists and art critics, creating their own artwork and writing about their creative choices just like professional artists do.
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Art Creation Planning (8 minutes): Students sketch their digital art concept on paper using colored pencils or fine-tip markers. Guide them to consider: What emotion or message do you want to convey? What colors will support this? What shapes or patterns will you use?
- Digital Art Creation (15 minutes): Students use tablets/Chromebooks to create their artwork using available drawing apps or presentation software drawing tools. Circulate to provide technical support and artistic feedback. Encourage experimentation with different tools and effects.
- Artist Statement Writing (12 minutes): Using the Artist Statement Template, students type their explanations directly on their devices. They should address: their artistic choices, the message or feeling they wanted to create, specific techniques they used, and what they learned during the process.
- Multimedia Integration (10 minutes): Students create a simple digital presentation combining their artwork with their written statement. Show them how to add their art as an image and format their text attractively. Demonstrate adding transitions or simple animations if time allows.
- Gallery Walk Preparation (5 minutes): Students save their work and prepare to present. Review presentation expectations: speak clearly, make eye contact, explain your artistic choices, and be ready to answer questions from the audience.
Closing (5 minutes)
Conduct a brief "gallery walk" where 3-4 volunteers share their digital artwork and artist statements. Celebrate the variety of creative approaches and artistic decisions made by the class.
Quick Check: What was one artistic choice you made and why? How did writing about your art help you think about it differently? What technology tool was most helpful in creating or presenting your work?
