- Advocate for fair play by ensuring all teammates have equal participation opportunities
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Fine-tip markers
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- 4 soft foam balls
- Colored cones or markers (8 total)
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students in a seated circle. Ask: "What does it feel like when someone gives you feedback about your performance - in sports, games, or activities? What makes feedback helpful versus hurtful?" Record 3-4 responses on whiteboard. Explain that today they'll practice giving respectful feedback while keeping everyone safe and included.
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Safety Agreement Creation (8 minutes): Divide class into 4 groups. Give each group chart paper and markers. Each group brainstorms 3-4 safety rules for team activities (physical space, equipment use, body contact, etc.). Groups post their charts and do a gallery walk to see all ideas.
- Respectful Feedback Framework (5 minutes): Introduce the "SBI" feedback model on whiteboard: Specific (what you saw), Beneficial (how to improve), Inclusive (encouraging words). Model with example: "I saw you pass to three different teammates - that's great inclusion! Try stepping into your throw for more accuracy. You're doing awesome at being a team player!"
- Practice Round - Partner Passing (8 minutes): Students pair up with foam balls. Partners practice underhand and overhand throws while giving each other SBI feedback. Rotate partners every 2 minutes. Listen for respectful language and specific observations.
- Team Challenge Setup (2 minutes): Create 4 teams of 5-6 students each. Set up 4 stations with cones marking boundaries. Each team gets one foam ball. Explain the "Inclusion Ball" challenge: teams must complete 10 consecutive passes where every team member touches the ball at least once per round.
- Inclusion Ball Challenge (10 minutes): Teams work at their stations. After each attempt (successful or not), teams huddle to give feedback using SBI model. Rotate roles so different students lead the feedback discussion. Circulate and note examples of respectful feedback and inclusive behaviors.
- Advocacy Practice (2 minutes): Pause the activity. Ask students to look around and identify if anyone seems left out or frustrated. Teach the "kind interruption" phrase: "Wait, let's make sure everyone gets a fair chance." Practice saying it together.
Closing (5 minutes)
Return to opening circle. Ask students to share one example of respectful feedback they gave or received today. Discuss how safety, respect, and inclusion work together in physical activities.
Quick Check: "Name one part of giving respectful feedback. What's one way to make sure everyone is included? How does safety connect to showing respect?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students using specific, constructive language when giving feedback rather than general praise or criticism
- Evidence of students advocating for teammates who may be excluded or struggling
- Application of safety agreements during physical activities without teacher reminders
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide feedback sentence starters on a reference card: "I noticed you..." "Next time try..." "You did great at..."
- Pair with a supportive partner during practice rounds and assign them the role of encourager during team challenges
- Allow students to demonstrate inclusion through non-physical roles like scorekeeper or feedback recorder
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Assign leadership roles as "inclusion ambassadors" who monitor multiple teams for fair play opportunities
- Have them create additional challenge variations that require even more cooperation and strategic thinking
- Task them with teaching the SBI feedback model to younger students during recess or buddy time
ELL/ELD Support:
- Post the SBI framework visually with picture examples and sentence frames in multiple languages when possible
- Use physical gestures and demonstrations to reinforce verbal feedback concepts
- Pair ELL students with bilingual peers who can provide translation support during team discussions
