Community Circle Contract Builders โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 5 | Subject: Health Education, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create visual community agreements by applying the three C's framework to build respectful classroom relationships and decision-making processes.

Standards

  • HE.5.4.7 (Identify ways to show respect for another's consent or non-consent (e.g., personal space))
  • HE.5.4.8 (Explain how to use collaboration and negotiation skills that support healthy behaviors and relationships)
  • HE.5.4.9 (Demonstrate healthy ways to manage and resolve conflict)
  • SEL.5.RDM.3 (Make principled decisions that align with personal and community values)
  • SEL.5.RDM.4 (Consider the broader social and environmental impact of choices)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Define consent, collaboration, and conflict resolution as the foundation of community building
  • Identify specific behaviors that demonstrate respect for others' boundaries and choices
  • Create collaborative agreements using negotiation and compromise strategies
  • Design conflict resolution steps that maintain community values and relationships
  • Evaluate how principled decisions impact both individual and community well-being

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Colored pencils
  • Fine-tip markers
  • White paper

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Begin with a quick community check-in. Have students stand in a circle and ask: "What does it feel like when someone respects your choices?" Allow 2-3 students to share briefly. Introduce today's focus on the "Three C's of Community" - write CONSENT, COLLABORATION, and CONFLICT RESOLUTION on the board.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Three C's Exploration (8 minutes): Divide class into three groups. Assign each group one C to define and brainstorm. Group 1: Consent (respecting yes/no, boundaries, personal space). Group 2: Collaboration (working together, sharing ideas, compromising). Group 3: Conflict Resolution (solving problems peacefully, listening, finding solutions). Give each group chart paper and markers to record their thinking.
  2. Gallery Walk and Discussion (7 minutes): Have groups post their charts and do a silent gallery walk. Then reconvene to discuss insights. Ask: "How do these three C's connect to each other?" and "Why are all three needed for a strong community?"
  3. Scenario Practice (10 minutes): Present real classroom scenarios on the board: "Two students want to use the same computer," "Someone doesn't want to share their art supplies," "A group can't agree on their project topic." Have mixed groups of 4-5 students choose one scenario and plan how to apply all three C's. Give them white paper to sketch or write their solution process.
  4. Community Contract Creation (10 minutes): As a whole class, create visual community agreements. On large chart paper, create three columns for each C. Have students contribute specific, actionable agreements. For example, under Consent: "We ask before borrowing supplies," under Collaboration: "We listen to all group members' ideas," under Conflict Resolution: "We use calm voices when we disagree." Record their exact words and have volunteers illustrate key points with simple drawings.

Closing (5 minutes)

Have students do a "commitment circle." Each student states one specific way they will practice the three C's this week. Post the community contract prominently and explain that you'll reference it regularly when making class decisions together.

Quick Check: Ask students: "Which of the three C's do you find most challenging?" "How might our classroom feel different when we use principled decision-making?" "What's one way you can show respect for someone's consent tomorrow?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students using specific vocabulary (consent, boundaries, compromise, principled decisions) accurately in their discussions and written work
  • Groups demonstrating collaborative behaviors while creating their solutions - taking turns, building on ideas, resolving disagreements respectfully
  • Students making connections between the three C's and providing concrete examples from their own experiences

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters for discussions: "Consent means..." "When we collaborate, we..." "To resolve conflict, we can..."
  • Pair students with strong verbal processors during scenario practice to support idea development
  • Offer choice between drawing, writing, or verbal sharing during the commitment circle

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have them facilitate their small groups during scenario practice and help peers think through complex solutions
  • Ask them to create additional scenarios based on current classroom challenges for future lessons
  • Challenge them to research how the three C's apply in larger communities or historical contexts

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Create visual vocabulary cards with pictures representing key terms (handshake for agreement, stop sign for boundaries, puzzle pieces for collaboration)
  • Encourage use of native language during initial brainstorming, then support translation to English
  • Pair with bilingual buddies who can provide clarification and support participation in discussions
