Team Fitness Challenge Lab β¨ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 5 | Subject: Physical Education, Technology | Duration: 45 minutes
π Description: Students collaborate in teams to design custom fitness challenges, track performance data using tablets, and present their results digitally.
Standards
- PE.5.2.3 (Applies movement concepts to strategy and tactics in physical activity)
- PE.5.4.3 (Chooses to engage in skill competency activities outside of physical education)
- PE.5.4.4 (Analyzes the health benefits of participation in physical activity)
- TECH.5.7.b (Use collaborative technologies to work with others, including peers and experts, to examine issues from multiple viewpoints)
- TECH.5.7.c (Contribute constructively to project teams, assuming various roles and responsibilities to work toward common goals)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Design and execute a team fitness challenge incorporating at least three different movement patterns
- Collect and record accurate performance data using digital tools during physical activities
- Collaborate effectively in assigned roles to complete team fitness projects
- Analyze collected fitness data to identify health benefits and improvement strategies
- Present team findings using technology while demonstrating proper movement techniques
Supplies Needed
- Tablets or Chromebooks
- Chart paper
- Fine-tip markers
- Cones or markers for activity stations
- Stopwatch or timer app
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students in a circle. Demonstrate three different movement patterns (jumping jacks, lunges, mountain climbers) while students mirror. Ask: "How could we measure if these exercises are helping our fitness?" Introduce today's challenge: teams will create fitness labs and use technology to track results.
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Team Formation & Role Assignment (5 minutes): Divide into teams of 4. Assign roles: Data Collector (tablet operator), Movement Leader (demonstrates exercises), Timer (tracks intervals), Reporter (presents findings). Rotate roles every 8 minutes.
- Challenge Design Phase (8 minutes): Teams use tablets to research and select 4 fitness exercises from provided categories: cardio, strength, flexibility, balance. Record chosen exercises and create 30-second interval plan on shared digital document.
- Station Setup (3 minutes): Teams set up their fitness stations using cones and chart paper signs. Movement Leaders practice demonstrating proper form for each exercise while Data Collectors prepare tracking sheets on tablets.
- Team Challenge Round 1 (8 minutes): Teams execute their designed challenge. Data Collectors record repetitions completed, Timers manage 30-second intervals, Movement Leaders coach form, Reporters observe and note team strategies. Document results digitally.
- Role Rotation & Round 2 (8 minutes): Rotate roles within teams. Repeat challenge with new roles. Compare performance data from both rounds using tablets. Teams analyze: Which exercises showed improvement? What movement strategies worked best?
- Digital Presentation Prep (3 minutes): Teams compile data and create brief digital presentations highlighting their top exercise, improvement strategies, and health benefits observed. Include photos or videos of proper form demonstrations.
Closing (5 minutes)
Teams present 1-minute findings to class, demonstrating one exercise and sharing their data insights. Emphasize collaboration successes and movement discoveries made.
Quick Check: What role did you enjoy most and why? Name two health benefits your team observed. How did technology help track your fitness progress?
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students actively collaborating in assigned roles and supporting teammates during physical activities
- Accurate data collection and proper use of tablets to document and analyze fitness performance
- Demonstration of safe movement patterns and ability to coach others using proper exercise form
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Pair with strong technology partners and provide simplified data tracking sheets with visual cues
- Offer modified exercise variations (wall push-ups instead of standard, step-ups instead of jumps)
- Provide sentence starters for digital presentations and allow extra preparation time
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Create comparison charts analyzing class-wide data trends and heart rate zone calculations
- Research and incorporate advanced movement patterns or interval training concepts
- Design follow-up challenges for other classes and create instructional videos demonstrating proper form
ELL/ELD Support:
- Provide visual vocabulary cards showing exercise names with picture demonstrations
- Use movement modeling and peer translation support during instruction phases
- Allow presentations in native language with English key terms or visual demonstrations with minimal verbal explanation
