Sky Watchers Compare and Collect β¨ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Science, Reading/ELA, Technology | Duration: 60 minutes
π Description: Students read two books about sky patterns, compare information using a chart, and create a digital collection folder with pictures and facts.
Standards
- 1-ESS1-1 (Use observations of the sun, moon, and stars to describe patterns that can be predicted)
- 1-ESS1-2 (Make observations at different times of year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year)
- 1.RL.9 (Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories)
- TECH.1.3.c (Collect and organize digital resources for learning projects)
- TECH.1.3.d (Use technology to explore real-world topics and questions)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify patterns of the sun, moon, and stars described in two different books
- Compare information about sky objects between two texts using a graphic organizer
- Collect and organize pictures and facts about sky patterns in a digital folder
- Ask real-world questions about what they observe in the sky
- Explain one pattern they learned about the sun, moon, or stars
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- Pencils
- Two different picture books about sun, moon, stars patterns
- Tablet or computer with internet access
- Digital folder creation capability (Google Drive, Seesaw, etc.)
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Show students the two books about sky patterns. Ask: "What do you notice when you look up at the sky during the day? At night? Today we're going to read two different books about the same topic - the sun, moon, and stars - and see what different things we can learn!"
Main Activity (50 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Create comparison chart (5 minutes): Draw a three-column chart on chart paper with headers: "Sun," "Moon," "Stars." Tell students this will help us collect facts from both books.
- Read first book together (10 minutes): Read the first book aloud, pausing to point out facts about sun, moon, or star patterns. Have students raise their hands when they hear a fact to add to the chart. Write 2-3 key facts in each column using simple words.
- Read second book together (10 minutes): Read the second book, again pausing for facts. Add new information to the chart using different colored marker. Point out when information is the same or different between books.
- Compare the books (8 minutes): Ask students: "What did both books tell us about the sun? What was different between the books?" Circle facts that appeared in both books. Discuss how the same topic can have different information.
- Generate real-world questions (7 minutes): Ask students to think of questions they have about what they see in the sky. Write 4-5 questions on the whiteboard like "Why does the moon change shape?" or "Why is the sun brighter in summer?"
- Create digital collection folder (10 minutes): Using the tablet/computer, show students how to create a digital folder called "Our Sky Patterns." Search for and save 3-4 pictures that match facts from their chart (sun rising, moon phases, star constellations, etc.). Have students take turns helping select images.
Closing (5 minutes)
Have students share one new thing they learned about sky patterns from the books. Review their digital folder and explain that they can add more pictures and facts as they continue learning.
Quick Check: Ask students: "What's one pattern of the sun, moon, or stars that we learned about today? How were our two books the same or different? What question do you have about the sky?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students identifying specific facts from the books to add to the comparison chart
- Students recognizing similarities and differences between the two texts about the same topic
- Students asking meaningful questions about sky patterns they want to investigate further
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide picture cards showing sun, moon, and stars to help students identify which facts go in which column
- Allow students to draw pictures instead of writing words when adding to the chart
- Pre-select 2-3 simple facts from each book and have students listen specifically for those
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have students create their own questions to research and add answers to the digital folder
- Ask them to identify which book gave more detailed information and explain why
- Challenge them to find connections between sun, moon, and star patterns
ELL/ELD Support:
- Use pointing and gestures when discussing sky objects, and encourage students to point to pictures in the books
- Provide sentence frames: "The sun ___" "The moon ___" "The stars ___"
- Focus on visual elements in the books and digital images to support comprehension
