Family Dinner Champions โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Reading/ELA, Health Education | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students write opinion pieces about family dinners and give peer feedback to strengthen their writing while exploring health influences.

Standards

  • 1.W.1 (Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure)
  • 1.W.5 (With guidance and support from adults, focus on a topic, respond to questions and suggestions from peers, and add details to strengthen writing as needed)
  • HE.1.2.1 (Describe how family influences personal health practices)
  • HE.1.2.2 (Describe how the school environment influences personal health)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Write an opinion sentence about family dinners with one supporting reason
  • Identify how families and schools influence healthy eating choices
  • Give helpful feedback to a partner's writing
  • Revise their writing based on peer suggestions

Supplies Needed

  • White paper
  • Pencils
  • Crayons
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Ask students: "Raise your hand if your family eats dinner together sometimes." After responses, say: "Today we're going to write about why families should eat dinner together, and we'll help each other make our writing even better!"

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Model the Opinion Structure (8 minutes): On the whiteboard, write: "I think families should eat dinner together because ___." Think aloud: "I need to give one good reason. I think... because we can talk about our day!" Write the complete sentence. Add: "That's my opinion!" Show how to wrap up with a closing thought.
  2. Brainstorm Reasons Together (5 minutes): On chart paper, record student ideas for why families should eat dinner together. Guide them toward health connections: "We eat healthy food," "We learn good manners," "We feel happy together." Keep the list visible.
  3. Discuss Family and School Health Influences (7 minutes): Ask: "How do families help us make healthy choices?" Record responses. Then ask: "How does our school help us eat healthy?" Compare the two lists, noting similarities like "choosing good foods" and "eating together."
  4. Independent Writing (10 minutes): Give each student paper. Have them write: "I think families should eat dinner together because ___" and complete with their own reason. Encourage them to add "That is why families should eat dinner together!" as a closing. Allow drawing to support their writing.
  5. Partner Feedback (5 minutes): Pair students. Each partner reads their writing aloud. The listener gives one compliment: "I like your reason because..." and asks one question: "Can you tell me more about...?" Partners switch roles.

Closing (5 minutes)

Have 2-3 volunteers share their opinion sentences. Ask the class: "How did talking with your partner help you think about your writing?"

Quick Check: "Give me thumbs up if you wrote an opinion with a reason. Show me one finger if you can name one way families help us eat healthy. Show me two fingers if you can name one way school helps us eat healthy."

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students completing the sentence frame with a logical reason
  • Partners actively listening and asking questions during feedback time
  • Students making connections between family/school influences and healthy choices

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide the sentence starter already written on their paper
  • Allow drawing with labels instead of full sentences
  • Pair with a strong reader for the feedback activity

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Encourage writing two reasons instead of one
  • Have them help struggling peers during partner time
  • Ask them to write about what makes a family dinner healthy

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pre-teach key vocabulary: opinion, reason, healthy, together
  • Allow native language discussion before English writing
  • Provide picture cards showing families eating together
