Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Display three art pieces of different lengths on the board. Say: "Today we become art critics! Critics are special people who look carefully at art and share what they think. Let's practice using our critic voices to describe what we see."

Main Activity (50 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Art Form Identification (8 minutes): Point to each artwork and ask "Is this THE painting or A sculpture?" Write responses on chart paper. Explain: "Paintings are flat and made with paint. Sculptures are 3D objects you can walk around." Have students practice saying "THE painting shows..." and "A sculpture has..."
  2. Subject Matter Hunt (10 minutes): Model looking at the first artwork: "I see THE dog sitting ON a chair IN the painting." Write this sentence on the board, underlining determiners and prepositions. Have students find subjects in the other pieces using the same pattern.
  3. Preposition Practice (8 minutes): Give students construction paper and crayons. Say: "Draw a simple scene with objects. Use these words: THE cat is UNDER the table, A bird flies ABOVE the house." Circulate and help students use the target language.
  4. Measurement Time (12 minutes): Distribute rulers to pairs. Have students measure the length of all three artworks. Record measurements on the board. Ask: "Which artwork is THE longest? Which is THE shortest?" Guide them to order from shortest to longest.

Gather students in a circle. Review the day's critic vocabulary on the board. Have students share one thing they learned about being an art critic.
