Balloon Balance Goal Champions โจ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 45 minutes
๐ Description: Students identify personal health goals and practice balance and focus by keeping balloons airborne while learning about goal achievement.
Standards
- HE.1.6.1 (Identify a simple personal health goal)
- HE.1.6.2 (Describe why achieving a health goal is important)
- HE.1.6.3 (Identify people who can help achieve a health goal)
- PE.1.1.7 (Strikes a balloon with various body parts)
- PE.1.1.8 (Balances on different bases of support)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Select one personal health goal from drinking more water, getting more sleep, or eating healthy foods
- Explain in simple terms why their chosen health goal matters for their body
- Name at least two people who can help them reach their health goal
- Strike a balloon using different body parts while maintaining balance
- Connect the focus needed to keep a balloon up with the focus needed to reach health goals
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- Construction paper
- Crayons
- Balloons (1 per student plus extras)
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Gather students in a circle. Ask: "What does your body need to stay healthy and strong?" Write responses on whiteboard. Introduce today's focus: choosing a health goal and learning how staying focused helps us reach our goals, just like keeping a balloon in the air!
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Health Goal Introduction (8 minutes): Present three health goals on chart paper with simple drawings: drinking more water (water bottle), getting more sleep (bed), eating healthy foods (fruits/vegetables). Have students stand by the goal they want to work on. Discuss in small groups why this goal matters.
- Helper People Discussion (5 minutes): Ask each group: "Who can help you reach this goal?" Write ideas on chart paper under each goal (parents, teachers, doctors, friends). Have groups share one helper idea.
- Balloon Warm-up (5 minutes): Give each student a balloon. Practice gentle strikes with palms, fingertips, then elbows while standing in place. Emphasize keeping balloon up requires focus and balance.
- Balance Challenge (8 minutes): Students strike balloons while balancing on one foot, then on tiptoes, then while walking slowly. Connect this to goals: "Reaching health goals takes balance and focus, just like this!"
- Goal Balloon Game (6 minutes): Students work in pairs, taking turns keeping balloon up while saying their health goal and one reason why it's important. Partner counts how long they can keep it up.
- Goal Helper Creation (3 minutes): Give students construction paper and crayons. Have them draw themselves with one person who will help them reach their health goal. Write goal at the top of paper.
Closing (5 minutes)
Students sit in circle holding their drawings. Each student shares their health goal and one helper. End with group chant: "Focus and balance help us grow, reaching our health goals, here we go!"
Quick Check: Ask: "What health goal will you work on? Who will help you? How is keeping a balloon up like reaching a goal?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students can clearly state their chosen health goal and explain one reason it's important
- Students demonstrate various balloon striking techniques while maintaining balance
- Students make connections between physical focus/balance and goal achievement during discussions
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Allow students to work with a partner during balloon activities for extra support
- Provide picture cards showing helper people (parents, teachers, doctors) for reference
- Use larger, slower-moving beach balls instead of balloons if coordination is challenging
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Have students create a simple 3-step plan for reaching their health goal
- Challenge them to keep balloon up while doing math problems or spelling words
- Ask them to demonstrate and teach balloon techniques to classmates
ELL/ELD Support:
- Use visual icons and gestures for key vocabulary (water, sleep, healthy food)
- Pair ELL students with bilingual buddies when possible
- Encourage drawing and pointing to communicate ideas during discussions
