My Story Studio Creation Lab โจ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Technology, Reading/ELA | Duration: 45 minutes
๐ Description: Students create original digital stories using drawings and words on tablets, then share their creations with partners and the class.
Standards
- TECH.1.6.a (Select digital tools to express ideas and creativity)
- TECH.1.6.b (Create original digital content (drawings, recordings, simple stories))
- TECH.1.6.c (Use words and pictures to communicate ideas with technology)
- TECH.1.6.d (Share digital creations with different audiences)
- 1.L.2d (Use conventional spelling for words with common spelling patterns and for frequently occurring irregular words)
- 1.L.2e (Spell untaught words phonetically, drawing on phonemic awareness and spelling conventions)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Create an original digital story using both pictures and words on a tablet
- Apply known spelling patterns and phonetic strategies when writing story text
- Use digital drawing tools to illustrate their story ideas
- Share their digital creation with a partner and provide feedback
- Present their story to the class using appropriate voice and pacing
- Demonstrate creativity and originality in their digital storytelling
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- Tablets or devices with drawing/story creation app
- Word pattern reference chart
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Display a simple digital story example on the board. Ask students: "What makes this story special? What do you notice about the pictures and words working together?" Introduce today's mission: "You're going to become digital storytellers, creating your own original stories using both pictures and words!"
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Story Planning (5 minutes): Students think of their story idea. Model thinking aloud: "I want to tell about a cat who loves to dance. My story will have three parts: the cat discovers music, learns to dance, and performs for friends." Have students turn and tell their partner their story idea.
- App Introduction (5 minutes): Demonstrate the drawing/story app features: how to add a new page, use drawing tools, add text boxes, and change colors. Show students where the spelling helper and voice recording options are located.
- Digital Creation Time (20 minutes): Students create their stories on tablets. Circulate and conference with students, encouraging them to use spelling patterns they know (like -at, -ing, -ed) and to sound out unfamiliar words. Remind them to include both pictures and words on each page.
- Partner Sharing (3 minutes): Students pair up and take turns sharing their digital stories with their partner. Partners give one compliment and ask one question about the story.
- Class Presentations (2 minutes): Invite 2-3 volunteers to share their stories with the whole class using the display screen.
Closing (5 minutes)
Gather students on the carpet. Ask them to share one thing they learned about combining pictures and words in digital storytelling. Create a class list on chart paper of "What Makes Great Digital Stories."
Quick Check: "Show me thumbs up if you used both pictures and words in your story. Point to your head if you used spelling patterns you know. Pat your heart if you felt proud sharing your creation."
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students successfully combining visual and text elements in their digital stories
- Evidence of phonetic spelling attempts and use of known spelling patterns in their writing
- Engagement and confidence when sharing their creations with partners and the class
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide sentence starters or story templates within the app
- Allow voice recording option for students who struggle with typing/writing
- Partner struggling students with tech-savvy peers for support
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Encourage multi-page stories with more complex plot development
- Invite them to experiment with animation features or sound effects in the app
- Have them create stories with specific themes or writing techniques (dialogue, rhyming, etc.)
ELL/ELD Support:
- Encourage students to include their home language alongside English text
- Provide visual vocabulary cards related to common story elements
- Allow more emphasis on visual storytelling with simple text labels
