Word Building Workshop โจ cross-curricular
Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Reading/ELA, Technology | Duration: 45 minutes
๐ Description: Students identify word parts and sort words into meaningful categories while using basic technology skills to demonstrate learning.
Standards
- 1.L.4b (Use frequently occurring affixes as a clue to the meaning of a word)
- 1.L.4c (Identify frequently occurring root words and their inflectional forms)
- 1.L.5 (With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings)
- 1.L.5a (Sort words into categories to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent)
- TECH.1.1.c (Use technology to get feedback and show what was learned)
- TECH.1.1.d (Demonstrate basic skills in using devices, apps, and digital tools)
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Identify root words in simple words with common endings (-s, -ed, -ing)
- Sort 12 given words into three categories: animals, foods, and feelings
- Explain why a word belongs in a specific category using complete sentences
- Demonstrate basic device skills by opening and navigating a simple presentation app
- Use technology to record their voice explaining one word sort choice
- Recognize word parts as clues to word meaning in familiar vocabulary
Supplies Needed
- Chart paper
- Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
- Scissors (child-safe)
- Tablets/devices with voice recording capability
- Word cards (provided in printable materials)
Lesson Structure
Opening (5 minutes)
Write "cats" on the whiteboard. Ask students what smaller word they see inside "cats." Circle "cat" and underline "-s." Explain: "Word parts are like clues that help us understand what words mean. Today we'll be word detectives finding these clues!"
Main Activity (35 minutes)
Step-by-step instructions:
- Introduce Word Parts (8 minutes): Write "jumping," "played," and "dogs" on the board. Have students identify the root word in each (jump, play, dog). Circle root words and underline endings. Explain how these endings give us clues about when something happened or if there's more than one.
- Model Word Sorting (5 minutes): Divide chart paper into three columns labeled "Animals," "Foods," and "Feelings." Show word cards for "happy," "apple," and "bird." Think aloud as you place each word in the correct column, explaining your reasoning.
- Practice Word Sorting (10 minutes): Give each student a set of 12 word cards. Have them work in pairs to sort all words into the three categories. Circulate and ask students to explain their choices using the sentence starter: "This word belongs here because..."
- Technology Introduction (5 minutes): Show students how to open the voice recording app on their device. Demonstrate pressing record, speaking clearly, and stopping the recording. Have students practice recording themselves saying "Hello, my name is..."
- Digital Sharing Activity (5 minutes): Students choose their favorite word from their sorting activity and record themselves explaining: "I put [word] in the [category] group because..." Play back 2-3 recordings for the class to hear.
- Word Parts Challenge (2 minutes): Show "eating" and "books." Have students identify root words and endings, connecting to earlier examples.
Closing (5 minutes)
Review the three categories by having students name one word from each group. Remind them that word parts and categories help us understand and organize words.
Quick Check: "What root word do you hear in 'playing'?" "Name an animal word from our sort." "How did technology help you share your learning today?"
Formative Assessment
During the lesson, look for:
- Students correctly identifying root words when you cover up word endings
- Accurate word placement in sorting categories with logical explanations
- Appropriate use of basic device functions (opening apps, recording, playback)
Differentiation Strategies
Support for Struggling Students:
- Provide word cards with pictures to support category sorting
- Partner struggling students with strong readers during sorting activity
- Use highlighting tape to show word parts more visually on the whiteboard
Challenge for Advanced Learners:
- Ask students to think of additional words that could fit each category
- Have them identify word parts in longer, more complex words
- Challenge them to create their own category and sort words accordingly
ELL/ELD Support:
- Provide visual supports or real objects for vocabulary words when possible
- Encourage students to record in their home language first, then English
- Use gestures and acting to reinforce word meanings during sorting
