Rhythm Makers Musical Workshop โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 1 | Subject: Music, Social-Emotional Learning | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create rhythmic patterns using body percussion, receive peer feedback, and make fair decisions about sharing performance time.

Standards

  • MU:Cr3.1.1a (With limited guidance, discuss and apply personal, peer, and teacher feedback to refine personal musical ideas)
  • MU:Cr3.2.1a (With limited guidance, convey expressive intent for a specific purpose by presenting a final version of personal musical ideas to peers or informal audience)
  • MU:Pr4.2.1b (When analyzing selected music, read and perform rhythmic patterns using iconic or standard notation)
  • MU:Pr5.1.1b (With limited guidance, use suggested strategies in rehearsal to address interpretive challenges of music)
  • SEL.1.RDM.3 (Use stop-and-think strategies before making decisions)
  • SEL.1.RDM.4 (Distinguish between fair and unfair actions)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Create a 4-beat rhythmic pattern using clap, pat, and stomp body percussion
  • Give constructive feedback to a peer about their rhythmic pattern
  • Apply feedback to improve their own rhythmic creation
  • Read and perform simple rhythmic patterns using picture symbols
  • Use "stop and think" strategy before making decisions about performance order
  • Identify fair ways to share performance time with classmates

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Crayons
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Timer or stopwatch

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students in a circle on the floor. Demonstrate the three body percussion sounds: clap (hands), pat (lap), stomp (feet). Have all students practice each sound together. Introduce the "stop and think" hand signal - hold up one hand like a stop sign when making decisions.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Learn Rhythm Symbols (5 minutes): Draw three simple pictures on whiteboard - hands for clap, circle for pat, foot for stomp. Practice reading and performing each symbol as a class. Create a simple 4-beat pattern together: clap-pat-stomp-clap.
  2. Create Individual Patterns (8 minutes): Give each student chart paper and crayons. Students draw their own 4-beat pattern using the three symbols. Walk around providing encouragement and helping students who need support with drawing.
  3. Partner Feedback Round (10 minutes): Pair students up. Partner A performs their pattern while Partner B listens. Partner B gives one compliment and one suggestion using sentence starters: "I liked..." and "Maybe you could try..." Switch roles after 5 minutes.
  4. Refine and Practice (7 minutes): Students return to their patterns and make improvements based on feedback. Encourage them to practice their refined version quietly. Circulate to help students apply suggestions.
  5. Fair Sharing Discussion (3 minutes): Gather in circle. Ask: "If we have 20 students but only 2 minutes for performances, what would be fair?" Practice "stop and think" signal. Guide students to suggest taking turns, shorter performances, or saving some for next time.
  6. Class Performances (12 minutes): Using the fair plan students created, have volunteers perform their final patterns. Audience gives thumbs up after each performance. Ensure all students who want to perform get a chance, even if brief.

Closing (5 minutes)

Students sit in circle and reflect on their learning. Ask them to show their "stop and think" signal and share one way they made their pattern better after getting feedback.

Quick Check: "Show me a clap symbol with your hands. What made our sharing time fair today? What does 'stop and think' help us do?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students successfully creating and performing 4-beat patterns with correct body percussion
  • Evidence of students applying feedback by changing or improving their patterns
  • Use of "stop and think" signal during decision-making moments about fair sharing

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide pre-drawn pattern templates with 2 beats instead of 4 beats
  • Pair with a supportive buddy who can model rhythm patterns
  • Use only two body percussion sounds (clap and pat) instead of three

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Create 8-beat patterns or patterns with rests (silence moments)
  • Add dynamics by drawing big symbols for loud and small symbols for quiet
  • Help other students by being feedback partners for multiple classmates

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use visual symbols and body movements rather than verbal instructions when possible
  • Provide sentence frames for feedback: "I hear ___" and "Try ___"
  • Pair with bilingual buddy or allow native language discussion during partner work
