Artist Spotlight Gallery โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 3 | Subject: Reading/ELA, Visual Arts | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students create artwork, write artist statements, and practice speaking skills while planning their own classroom gallery exhibition.

Standards

  • 3.SL.3 (Ask and answer questions about information from a speaker, offering appropriate elaboration and detail)
  • 3.SL.4 (Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or recount an experience with appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details, speaking clearly at an understandable pace)
  • VA:Pr4.1.3a (Investigate and discuss possibilities and limitations of spaces, including electronic, for exhibiting artwork)
  • VA:Pr5.1.3a (Identify exhibit space and prepare works of art including artists' statements, for presentation)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Ask detailed questions about artwork and exhibition spaces during class discussions
  • Present their artwork clearly with descriptive details at an appropriate speaking pace
  • Identify and evaluate different spaces in the classroom and school for displaying artwork
  • Write a complete artist's statement explaining their artwork's meaning and process

Supplies Needed

  • Construction paper
  • Crayons/colored pencils
  • White paper
  • Pencils
  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Begin by asking students: "Where have you seen artwork displayed?" Write responses on whiteboard. Introduce the lesson: "Today we'll become artists preparing for our own gallery show. You'll create art, write about it like real artists do, and plan where to display it."

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Gallery Space Investigation (8 minutes): Have students walk around the classroom in pairs, identifying potential exhibition spaces. They should note locations like bulletin boards, walls, window areas, and doorways. Each pair records 3 possible spaces on their paper, noting advantages and challenges of each location.
  2. Art Creation (12 minutes): Students create a self-portrait or favorite memory drawing on construction paper using crayons or colored pencils. Circulate and encourage students to add details and think about what story their artwork tells.
  3. Artist Statement Writing (8 minutes): Using the Artist Statement Template, students complete sentences about their artwork: what it shows, why they chose this subject, what materials they used, and what they want viewers to know about it.
  4. Gallery Space Sharing (4 minutes): Pairs report back to the class about their best exhibition space choice. They must speak clearly and explain their reasoning. Other students ask clarifying questions like "How would you hang artwork there?" or "What problems might happen in that space?"
  5. Artist Presentations (3 minutes): Select 3-4 volunteers to present their artwork and read their artist statement. Coach them to speak slowly and hold their artwork so everyone can see. Audience members prepare thoughtful questions about the art or the artist's process.

Closing (5 minutes)

Create a class chart titled "Our Gallery Planning List" with student input on final exhibition location and preparation steps needed for next week's gallery opening.

Quick Check: "What are two things you need to prepare artwork for exhibition? What makes a good artist statement? Why is speaking pace important when presenting?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students asking specific, detailed questions during gallery space discussions and peer presentations
  • Clear, appropriately-paced speech during presentations with descriptive language about their artwork
  • Complete artist statements that explain both the artwork's content and the student's creative choices

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters for asking questions: "Can you tell me more about..." or "Why did you choose..."
  • Allow students to practice their presentation with a partner before sharing with the class
  • Offer picture prompts or simple subjects for artwork creation

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Have them research and compare different types of art exhibitions (museum, gallery, outdoor displays)
  • Ask them to write additional details about their artistic techniques and inspiration sources
  • Assign them as "gallery assistants" to help classmates prepare their presentations

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pre-teach key vocabulary: exhibition, gallery, artist statement, display, presentation
  • Provide visual examples of artist statements and gallery spaces
  • Encourage drawing or pointing to supplement verbal explanations during presentations
