  • 3.SS.6 (Compare daily life, beliefs, and customs of people in different cultural groups)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Read and interpret a chart comparing three different cultural celebrations
  • Identify similarities and differences between celebration customs from different cultures
  • Write an opinion statement with proper title capitalization and a strong concluding sentence
  • Use evidence from charts to support their cultural comparisons

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • White paper
  • Pencils
  • Crayons/colored pencils

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Show students the Cultural Celebrations Chart on chart paper. Ask: "What do you notice about how different cultures celebrate special occasions? Turn and tell a partner one thing you see." Allow 2 minutes for sharing, then call on 3-4 students to share observations with the class.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Chart Analysis (8 minutes): Guide students through reading the Cultural Celebrations Chart together. Point to each column and row, asking "What information does this tell us?" Model how to find specific information: "If I want to know what foods are eaten during Diwali, I look here." Have students practice finding information by asking: "What colors are used in Chinese New Year celebrations?"
  2. Similarities and Differences Discussion (7 minutes): Create a T-chart on the whiteboard labeled "Similarities" and "Differences." Ask students to compare the celebrations using the chart data. Write responses like "All three use special foods" under similarities and "Different colors are important to each culture" under differences. Ensure students reference the chart data in their answers.
  3. Title Capitalization Mini-Lesson (5 minutes): Write three celebration titles incorrectly on the board: "chinese new year," "day of the dead," "festival of lights." Ask students what's wrong. Teach the rule: Capitalize the first word, last word, and all important words in titles. Practice correcting the titles together.
  4. Opinion Writing Setup (5 minutes): Explain that students will write an opinion about which celebration they find most interesting. Show the Opinion Writing Template and review the concluding statement examples: "That is why I think..." or "For all these reasons..." Model starting a concluding statement about your own opinion.
  5. Independent Writing (8 minutes): Students complete their Opinion Writing Templates using information from the chart. Circulate to help with capitalization in titles and remind students to include their concluding statement. Prompt students who finish early to add details from the chart to support their opinion.
  6. Partner Sharing (2 minutes): Students read their opinion pieces to a partner, focusing on their concluding statements and proper title capitalization.

Closing (5 minutes)

Have 3-4 volunteers share their concluding statements aloud. Create a class list on chart paper of "What Makes Celebrations Special Across Cultures" based on student observations from the charts.

Quick Check: Ask students: "What words do we capitalize in titles? What should every opinion piece end with? Name one similarity between these three celebrations."

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students correctly locating specific information on the chart when asked direct questions
  • Proper capitalization in celebration titles during the mini-lesson and writing activity
  • Opinion pieces that include clear concluding statements using evidence from the cultural chart

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters for opinion writing: "I think ___ is most interesting because..."
  • Highlight key information on their chart copy using colored pencils before writing
  • Offer verbal processing time with teacher before independent writing begins

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Research and add one additional cultural celebration to compare using classroom or library resources
  • Write a second paragraph explaining how their family's celebrations compare to those on the chart
  • Create their own simple chart comparing two celebrations from their own experience

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Pre-teach vocabulary words: celebration, custom, tradition, festival, culture
  • Allow drawing with labels to supplement written opinion pieces
  • Provide the opinion writing template with more sentence frames and visual cues
