Teamwork Sports Station Challenge โœจ cross-curricular

Teacher: TeacherAI | Grade: 3 | Subject: Health Education, Physical Education | Duration: 45 minutes

๐Ÿ“ Description: Students practice dribbling, kicking, and striking skills while learning collaboration and conflict resolution through rotating sports stations.

Standards

  • HE.3.4.8 (Demonstrate collaboration and negotiation skills)
  • HE.3.4.9 (Demonstrate healthy ways to manage and resolve conflict)
  • PE.3.1.6 (Dribbles continuously in self-space using the preferred hand)
  • PE.3.1.7 (Kicks along the ground and in the air, demonstrating three of the five critical elements)
  • PE.3.1.8 (Strikes a ball with a short-handled implement while demonstrating three of the five critical elements)

Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate collaboration by taking turns and encouraging teammates at each station
  • Use the "Stop, Talk, Solve" strategy to resolve conflicts during group activities
  • Dribble a ball continuously in self-space using their preferred hand for 30 seconds
  • Kick a ball along the ground and in the air showing proper foot positioning and follow-through
  • Strike a ball with a paddle or bat demonstrating side-body positioning and eye contact with the ball

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Crayons/colored pencils
  • Basketballs or playground balls (6-8)
  • Soccer balls (4-6)
  • Paddles or short bats (6-8)
  • Tennis balls or foam balls (8-10)

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Gather students in a circle. Display the "Stop, Talk, Solve" poster and review: "When we disagree, we STOP what we're doing, TALK about the problem calmly, and work together to SOLVE it." Demonstrate with a volunteer using a scenario like "What if two people want the same ball?"

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Form Teams (3 minutes): Divide class into groups of 4-5 students. Assign each group a team name and starting station. Emphasize that everyone gets equal turns and must cheer for teammates.
  2. Station 1 - Dribbling Zone (8 minutes): Students practice continuous dribbling in self-space using preferred hand. Challenge: Count how many dribbles without losing control. Teammates count and encourage each other.
  3. Station 2 - Kicking Corner (8 minutes): Set up targets 10 feet away. Students practice kicking balls along ground toward targets, then try kicking in the air. Focus on inside-of-foot contact and pointing toe where ball should go.
  4. Station 3 - Striking Station (8 minutes): Students use paddles to strike tennis balls off cones or tossed gently by partners. Emphasize side-body position (shoulder pointing toward target) and watching the ball hit the paddle.
  5. Rotation and Conflict Check (3 minutes): Teams rotate clockwise. Before starting new station, ask "Did anyone need to use Stop, Talk, Solve? How did it work?" Address any ongoing conflicts.
  6. Stations 4-6 (Continue rotation pattern): Repeat stations with same timing. Monitor for collaboration and provide specific feedback: "I see Maria waiting patiently for her turn" or "Great job helping Sam with his grip."
  7. Final Team Challenge (5 minutes): Each team demonstrates their best skill from any station while others cheer. Teams must negotiate and agree on which skill to show.

Closing (5 minutes)

Sit in circle. Each team shares one way they worked well together and one time they solved a problem as a team. Record responses on chart paper for future reference.

Quick Check: "Show me thumbs up if you used your preferred hand for dribbling. What are the three steps when we have a conflict? Which skill do you want to practice more?"

Formative Assessment

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students taking turns without adult prompting and using encouraging words with teammates
  • Proper hand dominance during dribbling and continuous control for increasing time periods
  • Correct foot positioning for kicks and attempt to use both ground and air techniques

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Use larger, softer balls for dribbling and allow two-handed dribbling initially
  • Place kicking targets closer (5 feet) and use stationary balls on cones
  • Pair with supportive teammates and provide specific praise for effort and improvement

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Add movement while dribbling (walk in small circle) or alternate hands
  • Increase kicking distance and add accuracy challenges (hit specific colored targets)
  • Try striking moving balls or alternate forehand/backhand paddle positions

ELL/ELD Support:

  • Use visual demonstrations and gestures for "Stop, Talk, Solve" steps
  • Post picture cards showing proper form for each skill at every station
  • Pair with bilingual buddies and use encouraging phrases in multiple languages
