Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Create an original character with specific traits, feelings, and motivations for a story beginning

  • Choose appropriate digital tools to support their narrative writing and character development

Supplies Needed

  • Chart paper
  • Whiteboard and dry-erase markers
  • Paper (white)
  • Pencils
  • Tablets or computers (1 per student or pair)
  • Simple digital drawing/writing app (free options: Book Creator, Storybird, or Google Slides)

Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Display a simple character image on the board. Ask: "What do you think this character is feeling? What might they say?" Record 2-3 student responses. Explain: "Today we'll create our own characters and bring them to life with words and technology tools YOU choose to help you learn best."

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Character Brainstorm (8 minutes): Students use the Character Profile Sheet to brainstorm their character's name, age, favorite thing, biggest worry, and one special trait. Circulate and help students think beyond basic descriptions to feelings and motivations.
  2. Technology Goal Setting (5 minutes): Show the Learning Goal Menu. Each student selects one personal technology learning goal (examples: "Learn to add pictures to my story" or "Practice typing my ideas faster"). Have them write their goal on their profile sheet.
  3. Digital Tool Selection (7 minutes): Introduce 2-3 available apps/tools. Students choose which tool will help them reach their learning goal. Partner students who need support with those comfortable with technology.
  4. Character Introduction Writing (10 minutes): Students write 3-4 sentences introducing their character in a specific situation. Prompt: "Show your character doing something that reveals their personality. What are they thinking or feeling?"
  5. Dialogue Addition (5 minutes): Students add 1-2 lines of dialogue that their character might say in this situation. Encourage them to make the dialogue match the character's personality and age.

Closing (5 minutes)

Partner students share their character introductions. Focus on how dialogue and descriptions help us understand the character's personality.

Quick Check: "What makes your character unique? How did your chosen technology tool help you learn today? What would happen next in your character's story?"

During the lesson, look for:

  • Students creating characters with specific traits beyond physical appearance (personality, feelings, motivations)
  • Dialogue that sounds natural for the character's age and situation
  • Thoughtful selection of technology tools that match their stated learning goals

Differentiation Strategies

Support for Struggling Students:

  • Provide sentence starters: "My character feels _____ because _____" and "[Character name] said, '_____' in a _____ voice."
  • Allow drawing combined with minimal text, focusing on one clear character trait
  • Pair with tech-savvy buddies and encourage voice-to-text features if available

Challenge for Advanced Learners:

  • Add a second character and show their relationship through dialogue
  • Include internal thoughts using italics or parentheses to show what character thinks vs. says
  • Experiment with advanced features of their chosen digital tool (animations, voice recordings, etc.)

  • Provide character trait vocabulary cards with pictures (happy/worried/excited/curious)
  • Encourage first language brainstorming, then translate key ideas to English
