Lesson Structure

Opening (5 minutes)

Ask students to raise hands if they brush their teeth before bed. Then ask: "Who taught you to do that?" Explain that today they'll explore who influences their health choices and write about these influences using facts and details.

Main Activity (35 minutes)

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Brainstorm Health Behaviors (5 minutes): On chart paper, list student examples of daily health choices (eating breakfast, washing hands, playing sports, getting sleep). Aim for 8-10 examples.
  2. Introduce Influence Categories (5 minutes): Draw three circles on whiteboard labeled "Family," "Culture," and "Peers." Define each: Family = people who live with/care for you; Culture = traditions and beliefs from your background; Peers = friends and classmates your age.
  3. Model Influence Analysis (5 minutes): Choose "eating vegetables" from the list. Think aloud: "My mom makes me eat carrots because she says they help my eyes. That's family influence. In my culture, we eat rice with every meal for health. My friends sometimes say vegetables are yucky. That's peer influence."
  4. Create Personal Influence Maps (10 minutes): Students fold white paper into thirds and label sections "Family," "Culture," "Peers." For each section, they draw/write 2-3 specific examples of how that group influences their health choices. Circulate to help students think of concrete examples.
  5. Write Explanatory Paragraphs (10 minutes): Using their influence maps, students write three paragraphs (one per influence type). Each paragraph needs: topic sentence introducing the influence type, 2-3 specific examples with details, concluding sentence. Provide sentence starters on board: "My family influences my health by..." "My culture affects my health choices because..." "My peers influence me when..."

Closing (5 minutes)

Students share one surprising influence they discovered from any category. Emphasize that understanding these influences helps them make better health decisions.
